Itachi was good at a lot of things.
But it occurs to me that espionage was not one of his strong points.
He was a spy, that didn't actually manage to get much information to anyone.
The active hokage didn't even know he was a spy so who was his contact after the third died?
They had no idea of the abilities of the various Akatsuki members, and no heads up when crap was about to hit the fan.
Itachi knew he was dying and didn't take any of the Akatsuki out with him, though he we quite capable of doing so.
He purposefully gave more power to a rogue ninja.
Hospitalized Kakashi.
No one knew that Tobi existed until after part Sasori vs Sakura and Chiyo. And Itachi thought it was Madara and didn't bother to say anything.
He never delivered up or set up a trap for any Akatsuki members.

... I'm just not very sure what he did as a spy but help the enemy.
Maybe you guys can shed some light on this

He was just a watcher and protector in the dark, he kept the Akatsuki from attacking Konoha and even after being reanimated he still protected the Shinobi world by beating Kabuto.

well your actually right...but have u thought about this itachi mission was to spy on akatsuki and to protect konoha which he succeeded in doing while alive no akatsuki member attacked konoha while he was alive oro attack after he left the akatsuki so he doesnt count, and what about this itachi was indeed powerful but in no way could he defeat all of them if he was caught he could probably beat 4 of them hidan sasori deidara and kisame and he would have had a lot of trouble with kisame and mybe kakuzu and he would have had alot of trouble with him too and a lot of trouble with sasori really the only one i see him easily beating is deidara...but like i said he might had to play along because he knew pain and obito were watching and if he were caught his ass was grass

what he did during the war had nothing to do with espionage

protector how? I mean really how? The only thing he ever did that may be construed as protector-esque while he was a living member of Akatsuki was hyping Jiraiya. Which is negated by putting Kakashi and Sasuke in the hospital with an ailment only Tsunade could treat. When she herself was not too close to the village.

I mean, thinking about the info Konoha needed. They had none of. At best I only see him protecting his brother in part 2

You're actually absolutely right man.. I agree with you 100%

Itachi was an excellent shinobi, imo.. And possibly one of the best assets to Konoha.. but he sucked as a "spy"...

He could have done so much more than what he did..

I believe his contact after the Third was Jiraiya, all the information gathered by Jiraiya must of been as a result of Itachi's intel, Itachi couldn't reveal anything more but the movements of Akatsuki or the members or leader would get very suspicious because nobody besides those in akatsuki know each other, their abilities and since it would be Konoha shinobi's coming after them, they could easily put two it together. :)

i like itachi, one of my favourites and am a 100 % sure he was a hero BUT .... some of the stuff he did were .... weird. he also wasn't your typical good guy (he was proud of his power) and gave his power to kill GARA (for the 1tail). but again no one is perfect in this series .... :yeah:

He was dying anyway. Wouldn't it have been best to surprise Amaterasu Kakuzu. To Surpise stab seal Hidan. To surprise smash
Sasori. He could have operated in the same fashion Zetsu did in the war. By the time they discovered the traitor they would have been greatly weakened. I mean he could have taken out Zetsu long ago which would have left Obito with no army now.

His contact was danzo if anyone. Danzo wouldn't share the info because he wanted the village founded on hiruzen a teachings to fail so he could rebuild it much more militarized.

Well the only people whom Itachi could have sent information directly was Danzo, Hiru and the crappy elders (all others thought him a lunatic mass murderer) . . . . since Hiru died only Danzo and the Elders should have been the only ones to recieve any information..... and funnily enough Danzo knew stuff more than anyone out there, like when to quit the village during Nagato's attack or such.....

Didnt Akatusuki usually only contact each other through Holograms?

As for Zetsu.... he is a clone created from Hashi cells.... it wont take much create another one.
