Well...now that i think about it, Itachi didn't do squat while being a spy.

Except for Not properly capturing Naruto in part 1. I mean, Tobi knew all about him, so....yeah.

I can't even clasify itachi as a spy, he did nothing spy worthy. He leaked no info, even if he did it didn't help'd anybody. And jiraiya is not his contact, jiraiya is a spy himself one surpassed only by kabuto.

he was a good spy IMO simply because he did his "spy" job. His only job was to make sure nobody attacked konoha. It was even stated in the manga that Obito waited to attack konoha until Itachi was dead

Danzo knew who the leader was suspected to be, because of Naruto. Naruto told Kakashi about his run in with Minato during his fight with Pain. At that time Minato told Naruto about his fight with 'madara' who was behind the nine tails attack on Konoha.
Kakashi had a messenger bird sent to Danzo who was heading to the conference.

As for Itachi being a spy.. I don't think so.. He may of prevented other akatsuki from attacking the leaf while he was alive, but I don't believe he fed any information to the leaf.
