I'm just going to keep this short and sweet.

Starting with his databooks stats.

As you can see, Gai is a perfect 5 in all areas that he utilizes in a fight, with the exception of intelligence.

Now let's take a look at some overlooked feats.​

Strength: Gai was able to hold his own, while in base form, against the likes of Kisame who is noted to have super human strength

Reaction: Gai has shown to have very proficient reaction speed, as seen here against Obito, an opponent of such high tier.

Stamina: During his fight against Kisame, Gai was able to not only go up to the 7th Gate, but also use Morning Peacock and Daytime Tiger with no visible chakra exhaustion.

1) He was hacked up on Kyuubi chakra
2) That has nothing to do with I said. Kicking a person is just Taijutsu but Taijutsu users have a disadvantage against something like the 1000 hands summoned by Hashi. They got some seriously OP characters and techniques and the emphasis on Taijutsu is greatly decreasing. He is a great shinobi but he's only underrated because of the fact he's associated with Taijutsu

With his seventh gate, I would place him on the level of Kisame, Kakuzu, and Maybe Oonoki. All of which I place as mid s-rank.

Lol first of all, you're bringing up a technique used by the God of Shinobi, when in fact the majority of the narutoverse are at a disadvantage in comparison to it. Ofcourse Gai doesn't stack up with those of top 5 worthy shinobi. He is underrated because of the fact that not only is he the greatest taijutsu user, but he is the fastest shinobi in the NV after Naruto, Minato, and A. Not to mention he has wide scale taijutsu techniques such as Hirudora and Morning Peacock, with the range of any mid-long range ninjutsu. So no, no major disadvantage of being a taijutsu only user.
