That is what has been said by Madara a numerous time now.

Some Questions:

Hashirama died in his youth or prime. That's why he is the same age now (Edo form) as he was when he fought Madara back then. If he did beat Madara that day and lived how is it that when he is revived his the same age/looks ?

Thoery:

My theory is that Hashirama did beat Madara that day and he did seal the Kyuubi and he did win but at the end of the day he died or should i say He Sacrificed Himself !

Mito Uzumaki, the wife of Hasshirama Senju sealed the Kyuubi within herself or it would be right to say that Hashirama Senju sealed the Kyuuubi inside of her(assumption).

Hashirama was a staunch believer of balance in the world. He already created the Konoha with Madara's collaboration and he already saw the difference in powers of the villages. His village was over powered due to the two most powerful clans existing in the same village. He was already thinking how to create balance of power in the world. And the answer was the obviously the distribution of Bijuus among the villages . He after defeating Madara had to obviously deal with Kyuubi and seal it in someone. The answer was Mito Uzumaki. An Uzumaki with strong life force and chakra: ideal to control a bijuu and become jinchuriki. Hasirama sealed the Kyuubi using a sealing jutsu of high grade. im assuming that the sealing jutsu was of high level that is performed by the user and it takes the users life after it is performed, much like nagato's jutsu.He sacrificed himself and passed the Will Of Fire to his brother entrusting him to distribute the Bijuu among the other villages honestly. Hashirama did distribute the bijuu but by the hands of Tobirama.
Hashirama sealed the kyuubi inside Mito and died that day. And in this way Madara's statement that "No one who has seen it has lived to tell about it" hold true.

Conclusion:

- Hashirama died the same day he defeated the Kyuubi and Madara
- He sealed the Kyuubi inside Mito Uzumaki using a high level sealimg technique that takes user's life
- He carried out the balance of power in the world by ordering his successor Tobirama to distribute the Bijuus among the villages

Obviously Madara survived much to Hashirama's surprise, but he was already weakened too much.

Good theory but just because Hashirama died young does not mean he died after fighting Madara. It is a well known fact that he died sometime during the first war, the same general time he fought Madara for the last time. So it is very possible that he died a couple years if not less than a year after defeating Madara, meaning his appearance would not have changed much at all.

To all those posting here, the OP never stated Dead Demon seal nor did he say Madara died young. Please read more carefully.

Minato was the one who created the demon seal at the first place, the third hokage already said that. and madara died after their last fight lol they already mentioned it to the manga. but after he died he awaken the rinnegan right, giving him time to perform the gedo mazo and take his soul to it. da dadadadada anyways this thred is fail. read the manga bro

Hashirama did not die young. He lived long enough to marry Mito and have a child with her (she became pregnant after the kyuubi was sealed - for proof read Kushina's story), and have that child grow, marry and have a daughter. He died when Tsunade was already old enough to be taught gambling... That would make it at least 25 years after the kyuubi sealing.

He never said he used RDS all of you are just assuming he said that because it takes the casters life. there may be more than one sealing tech that kills you

Don't forget the necklace Tsunade inherited. It was meant to control the jinchuriki and the tailed-beasts. He probably created it for Mito. He wouldn't have died right away, plus he met Tsunade when she was a child. His first granddaughter. He lived long enough for that to happen and passed on his bad influences to the child.

You'd have to connect the timeline regarding his battle with Madara and Tsunade's birth to figure how long it had been since their battle at the VOTE, and was it after he knew Tsunade or before he married Mito.
