So I have thought of this theory for some time but have been too lazy to post it on here. Since I realize that the forums have been a little dead recently, I have decided to post this.
In this thread I will demonstrate my basis of determining what is truth and what is not in the conversation between Sasuke and Madara, after the Itachi-Sasuke fight. I am not saying that this is the absolute truth, but it gives a good basis of questioning Madara's statements, and may open up possibilities of discussion about alternative motives of both Itachi and Madara.
So the basis of my theory originated from Ch. 398 Page 5 with Madara stating "On the off chance that I might know the truth... He tried to seal my mouth shut with Amaterasu"
This statement is in a frame with a sole focus on a burning candle. I took this as a sign from Kishi trying to telling us something. Now, in European and American culture, fire is a symbol of many things, one of them including truth & enlightenment. Fire comes from the sun, and the sun shines light upon the darkness to reveal the truth. I did some research and discovered that the Goddess Amaterasu (Goddess of the Sun) is also associated with enlightenment, thus truth.
The word Amaterasu is accompanied by a burning candle one other time here:
Ch. 397 Page 10
This is the second instance in which Amaterasu and the burning candle exist together in a picture frame. This fortifies the assumption that the burning candle is associated with Amaterasu, which is associated with enlightenment/truth. Also, as we all know, the statement in this particular frame is a true statement, as we did witness Amaterasu activating at the sight of Tobi's Sharingan.
So, this gave me the idea that any of Tobi's statements that is accompanied by a burning candle, is a true statement.
I noticed that as Tobi goes on to tell his story to Sasuke, Tobi makes some statements that we know as the audience, are also true. So adding to the criteria of differentiating truth from lies, would be that any statement that has a picture of a flashback is also a true statement.
Example of Madara's statement accompanied by only a picture of a flashback:
Now, you must be careful, some flashback statements include a picture of the current Tobi talking, which I speculate to be NOT true. for example:
Tobi does say some statements that we know to be true and they are not accompanied by the burning candle, so make your own judgement. Like I said, this theory does not prove to be absolutely correct, but it gives a good basis to question Madara and think about alternative motives of both Itachi and Madara.
So, recap...
To find the truth, look for:
-Madara's statements that are accompanied by the burning candle
-Madara's statements that are in just a pure flashback picture (does not include flashbacks that include a picture of the current Tobi talking)
Everything else is most likely a lie
I will not list all statements that include the burning candle/flashbacks so read Chapters
This will make you question what were Itachi's real motives in assassinating the Uchiha Clan, and wanting to keep his brother alive.
