because cutting out an eye and replacing it with your own would totally work since Zoro is a brilliant surgeon right.

It's nothing more than a wound. Zoro simply lost his eye, there are no special power ups or mysteries surrounding it. But I am pretty sure Zoro received/learned something incredible in exchange for his eye. Zoro is the only one to to lose an important organ during the skip, I don't think Oda'd do something like this to Zoro just to make him look more badass.

How come Shanks and Rayleigh have scars over their eyes without losing them?

Probably something just to make him look more badass. I mean the fact that none of the SH's have asked "yo Zoro...wheres your other eye?" Is kinda odd. Either Oda likes making the SH's ignorant or he'll fight someone out of his league and during the fight we'll get a flashback where the SH's ask Zoro about his eyes off panel then Zoro ends up opening it in the fight (these asspull scenes happen alot in japanese anime/manga)

But who knows. It might just be an empty socket, i hope it is.
