What do we know about Zetsu so far?
1.He is The Akatsuki scout
2.Zetsu’s body is half Venus flytrap plant
3.Zetsu can emerges in soil, tree, and rock surface
4.His face is half white and half black
5.he possess such a weird eyes (yellow flashy)
6.his white side has a robotic voice tune
7.He disposes Akatsuki’s dead body evidence, by eating it.
As a scout of such a secret organization Zetsu must work in a stealth way. That’s why he doing his works..... underground.
Analog to a Rhizomatus plant there is a possibility that Zetsu using this subterranean stem or a bulb-like rhizome to extent his body under the ground surface. This rhizome is what makes Zetsu can emerge everywhere in almost every place.

This rhizomal multiplying system allows Zetsu to exist in many different spots/places simultaneously. Most of people misunderstood this by assuming Zetsu can transfer his body in the very high speed to explain how can he be in two places in almost the same time. In this theory He is not moving, he is multiplying. As we have seen in the chapters of rescuing Gaara mission.
This Rhizome also connects every Zetsu (the Main Zetsu and his Clones). We can say this as Zetsu’s rhizomal intra net system. It is useful for a very fast data transfer (synchronous) to deliver signals like a broadband internet bandwidth.
But, a system always has its limitation. The Zetsu’s rhizomes elongation is also limited. Because, it is depend on Zetsu’s chakra amount. This elongation limitation then determines how far Zetsu’s clones “separated from its main body. In the other word Zetsu’s elongation range is limited. This is what the Akatsuki Leader Said “ ..Use your largest range!!” Then again most people, I presume, experience misunderstanding about the word “range” that refer to Zetsu’s eye sight range. These interpretation then giving birth to the theory of “Golden Bakyugan”.
But Zetsu is actually has a yellow flashy eyes (like gold),… what was that eyes doing then, in the chapter 255? OK…we’ll keep the answer for later.

This growth tip absorbs nutrients from the soil and converts the materials to create (manufacture) a new Zetsu clone. This process requires a lot of anabolism and catabolism reaction. This whole process cannot exist without the energy supply. In the real world, plant gains its energy by producing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) during the photosynthesis process. This Energy then substituted by Zetsu’s chakra.
This growth tip then differentiated into Zetsu’s organs and tissues base on what encoded on Zetsu’s DNA. This process happened gradually.
That is why this Jutsu (The “Perhaps its The Enemy Trap” Jutsu) is actually Zetsu’s works. And those five tokens to seal (locked) the Akatsuki’s cave entrance were also the Works of Zetsu. (chapter 263 pg: 08,14, and15).
OK this is the Logical analogy. The growth tip forms the callus. The calluses then absorbs and converts the soil nutrients (from the soil bulk) into the enemies clones based on the enemy’s DNA code that had been downloaded earlier (an anabolic (constructive) process with the source of energy from Zetsu’s chakra). After the clones formed completely, to maintain the clone work properly it is still required the chakra supply. After the clones defeated (dies) it will return to its previous origin, the soil. This actually resemble with our daily process in making compost.
Yep, when we grow a plant we expect the plant to absorb nutrients from soil and fertilizers we add. With the continuous process of photosynthesis the plant will grow more. But, if the plant dies the body of the plant will be decayed and return to what we call compost that basically is a fertile soil.
Now, the question is when was Zetsu download Gai’s team DNA (kekkai genkai)? Zetsu was downloading (scanning) Gai's team DNA in the chapter 255.
There is another theory to explain this Zetsu’s special doujutsu which is called The Golden Bakyugan.
In this theory (The Special Theory of Zetsutivity), Zetsu’s doujutsu explained as actually a jutsu to download enemy’s DNA configuration, or a bloodline scanner. Not only the DNA config Zetsu also gaining the memory record of the enemy that’s why Zetsu can mention Maito Gai’s name correctly and knowing that Gai is a quite skillful opponent. (chapter 255)
The former Akatsuki’s spy was also doing this kind of job, Yes Kabuto with his Chakra Card jutsu. But, Kabuto’s work is not as advanced as Zetsu’s works. (chapter 39)

I don’t know for sure. But humans brain divided into the right and left side. The left side is responsible for the Logical stuff and the right side is responsible for something like intuition or instinctive stuff. Have you ever heard a quote that says; “The dark side of logic is unlogic”. Just my speculation this white side Zetsu is the logical Zetsu and the black side is the instinctive Zetsu. With the white side robotic voice tune my higher speculative guess about Zetsu is, Zetsu is an android or a half cyborg and a half human. Just like Cell from the DBZ. What is that flytrap plant extension use for?
Maybe you were thinking that to perform The “Perhaps its The Enemy Trap” Jutsu Zetsu must be have a lot of chakra stock. Yeah to fight against two Jounins and two chuunins (chapter 263 & 265) at the same time is quite required a lot of chakra. This is the part where the Zetsu’s Flytrap extension plays its role. In my theory Zetsu’s flytrap extension probably use for a solar panel that absorbs and convert sunlight energy into chakra.
A bunch of Zetsu were collecting the chakra (from the sunlight plus Zetsu’s own chakra) and forming the enemy’s clones. Fill the clones with the chakra stock like a battery and the enemies will fought against their own clones until the clone’s chakra supply run out. After that automatically the clone “dies”.
Why Zetsu is a Cannibal?
Zetsu’s disposed the dead bodies by consumed it was on purpose. Yeah he can simply put a lot of explosive tags to destroy the dead bodies (mostly come from the AL Shape shifting jutsu ) into dust. Zetsu was use consume his prey to obtain a nitrogenous stock of amino acids to create the next clones. He can manufacture it too, but if we can get a donut for free why should bother to make it by our self.
Well, There is one more important substance to creates Zetsu’s clones and his enemy's clones. What is it? … What is the plant need the most? Yes, Exactly the answer is Water!!.

Beside Bakyugan there is another jutsu that we know has its certain range depend on the user chakra. What is it? Yep, Shikamaru’s Kagemane no Jutsu. Hence, the word range not always related to a doujutsu like the bakyugan. It is the Zetsu’s eyes picture that has driven us to the conclusion that the “range” means the eye sight range. That in my theory the range means the largest range of Zetsu’s rhizome elongation.
