Zabuza is a tall and noticeably muscular man with pale skin, short spiky black hair, brown eyes, and small eyebrows. He is normally seen wearing bandages like a mask over the bottom half of his face. Under his mask, he has a relatively narrow jawline and jagged-teeth. He wears his forehead protector sideways on his head, and prior to his defection from Kirigakure, donned the village's standard uniform and flak jacket. After his defection, and during his time with Amegakure, he is seen shirtless, with his chest only covered by a belt to which he attached his Kubikiribōchō, wearing baggy pants with the striped pattern typical of Kirigakure and mimetic wrist-warmers extending up to his elbows, with matching leg-warmers.

Zabuza was initially aggressive, arrogant, cruel, cold and ambitious, willing to become Gatō's thug to gain enough funds to start a second coup d'etat on the Mizukage, and kill anyone who stood in his path.His reputation for cruelty and ruthlessness began as a child where he killed every single candidate in Kirigakure's Academy, earning him the moniker of "Demon of the Hidden Mist" (霧隠れの鬼人, Kirigakure no Kijin). While originally appearing to be a cold hearted man who would not hesitate to get the job done, Zabuza was raised under the harsh conditions of the Hidden Mist to not show emotion and mercy as all time. but latter on after his defection from Kirigakure and sometime after joining Amegakure he changed his heart. He is now an ambitious, cool headed, analytical and a caring person. He has changed so much that he would willingly give his own life to protect his comrades a trait he shares with Kakashi Hatake.

During the time under the term of Fourth Mizukage Yagura when the Hidden Mist Village was known as the Blood Mist Village, Zabuza gained his moniker "Demon of the Mist" when he slaughtered the ninja accademy graduates as part of the tradition started by Yagura to select ideal candidates to join the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, though zabuza had never attended the accademy. His actions having the practice discontinued, Zabuza gain further fame as member of the Kirihagure ANBU before finally joining the Seven Swordsmen. As a member, Zabuza gained the Guillotine Sword, a blade that can repair itself using the iron within the blood of those it cuts. After sometime he attempted an assasination of Yagura.In time, after his assassination attempt on Yagura in a coup d'etat failed, Zabuza subsequently fled from place to place.Since that day, Zabuza became hired muscle for the highest bidder in hopes to gain enough funding to make another attempt on Yagura's life.
