I truly do believe Kishi messed up big time with Haku's death. If he had Haku live, and Zabuza die, he could have developed Haku to believe in himself more, and realize he is more than just Zabuza's tool. Developing Haku's fatal flaw (always putting other before you) and having Haku develop to where he realizes there are times to put yourself ahead of others, would have been awesome to watch.
