While Atem is normally the dormant body, he is Yugi's voice of reason, and get's annoyed with Yugi often, even when Yugi's putting a plan into place that Atem doesn't understand. Atem is more serious in his fights, and will normally be the punchline to Yugi's jokes, telling him to stop afterwards.

Background
When Yugi's mother was pregnate with him, Orochimaru captured her and performed experiments on her. His subordinate, Sakon, was born with a condition that allowed his brother and he to be fused, and so Orochimaru attempted to duplicate this condition. He infused the unborn infant with DNA of a long-dead ninja known as the "Pharaoh", from a forgotten land. When Yugi's father discovered why his wife was missing, he confronted Orochimaru, and attempted to fight him, only to be struck down, and chopped to pieces by Orochimaru's Kusanagi. After seeing her husband killed by her kidnapper, Yugi's mother was so overwhelmed with emotion, she fell into a state of depression and gave up all hope to escape Orochimaru.
She later gave birth do a healthy boy, with no visible defect. Upon further inspection from a chakra sensor under Orochimaru's command, it was discovered that the Pharaoh lived deep within Yugi, unable to surface for lack of power. Orochimaru then decided to let the woman and child go, for they had no further use to him. Before letting her go, however, Orochimaru whipped the woman with his serpent-like tounge because she was a failed experiment. Before she left, however, she was gifted with a small box of gold objects. She was told to give them to her son when she believed he was old enough. Orochimaru then sent the two on their way with an evil grin on his face.

Now, throughout Yugi's life, he had been great at games, puzzles, and mind teasers, so he was excited about this. He quickly began to put it together, and learned that the puzzle wasn't a normal, flat puzzle, but a 3-D puzzle. But this didn't slow him down one bit, and Yugi came down to a pyramid-shaped puzzle, with a hole in the center, and the last piece in his hand. Yugi was about to complete the puzzle, when the emmense chakra surged through his body, and he fell to the floor, along with the puzzle. While on the ground, he reached out his hand, and pushed the last piece of the puzzle into the hole. Instantly, Orochimaru's chakra was exerted from the puzzle, and the chakra was absorbed by the Pharaoh, giving him enough power to surface.
Yugi and the Pharaoh then stood face-to-face. They looked at each other, and then the Pharaoh thanked Yugi for releasing him. Yugi and the Pharaoh then spoke for a while, and Yugi learned his real name; Atem. A distant relative of Atem, Yugi was the perfect host for his body, and weather or not Orochimaru knew this is unknown.

Atem pushed him to become a strong ninja, and so Yugi sought out a sensei who would not judge him for his mutation. Eventually, he came across Tenzo, who offered to teach him a couple elements. Immediatly, Atem spoke up from behind the hood and asked if Tenzo had room for two students. Tenzo did not judge, or even seem phased by Yugi's mutation, and taught the two as if they were two separate students.
While learning the earth element, Atem noticed that Yugi was far surpassing him in the element, and was expecting Tenzo to point it out any second. The longer Atem waited, the more distracted he was, until he finally asked Tenzo why he wasn't comparing him to Yugi.

And some ninja don't like the way their village is working, and so they leave their village anyways. This boy is one of those ninja." After their training session, Yugi and Atem tracked down the boy.
Yugi followed the boy closely, while Atem followed in the background. The boy obviously knew that he was being followed, and sped up, Yugi gestured to Atem, and the both of them sped up. They followed the boy to the edge of the village, where he made a mad dash into the forest, only to run into Atem's arm, clotheslining himself.
"What do you want?" the boy asked. "I left my village, what else is there? I'm not in the bingo book, am I!?"
Yugi and Atem then explained their ability, and simply asked the boy his name.
"My name? I'm Migualon J.J. Now, if you'll excuse me-"
"Why'd you leave your village?" Atem asked. And then Migualon went into a deep description of how he didn't like how his village system worked, and so he left. After Yugi and Atem agreed that there were no more questions, the allowed Migualon J.J. to leave, and returned to the village fused. The other villagers spoke behind their backs (which is hard when there's always someone watching it) about their odd mutation, and both Yugi and Atem thought about what Migualon had said. Then they made their decision.
They spoke with Tenzo-sensei, and told him that they were going to leave the village. While he was disappointed with them, Tenzo obliged, and taught the two the last of their lightning and earth jutsu. After that day, Yugi said good-bye to his mother (without Atem), and the two of them made to leave the village.

Yugi and Atem then introduced themselves to Orochimaru, and Oro was delighted to find out that his master plan had come to frutation, and that his experiments had even come to him. He took the two boys to a small village in the Rice Country, and put them under the supervision of a ninja whom he held in high regard. After meeting with Yard, Yugi and Atem found a way to make friends with him, and the three of them decided to work together in order to survive surving under Orochimaru. During this time, Yard taught both Yugi and Atem how to summon his Condors, and Atem showed to have more of a skill for summoning that Yugi.

The two men separated almost instantly and fought off the samurai quickly. When more samurai came, the two were exhausted, but put on a brave face and prepared to fight again. They were shocked to find that the samurai were comming in the name of the Land of Iron's general. Yugi and Atem obliged and followed them to the general.The general aknowledged their abilities, and admired their ability to split apart and fuse together. He asked for more information about what they could do, and Atem (who was separated from Yugi) told Yugi to stay quiet.
"We would love to tell you," Atem said. "But we request that you teach us something in return." After discussing that samurai could do very little for ninja, they came to the agreement that if the samurai taught them weaponry, Yugi and Atem would answer any questions about their abilbities. So, after a year of training, Yugi and Atem were seventeen, and had mastered weaponry. This style of fightning came more naturally to Atem, but Yugi didn't care, stating that using these types of weapons wasn't very fun, and that he just wanted to run around and enjoy life. As the two (or three) ninja made their way through the lands, they met another man who was on the run. He said that someone was after him, and asked for refuge. Mig, Yugi, and Atem decided to help the man, and hid him in a cave. As the man was too paranoid to leave the cave, the three ninja were forced to search for things for this man to eat. As none of the four were sensor's, no one knew where the man who was hunting the refugee was.One day, as Yugi was out looking for food, he met another man. The new man asked if Yugi knew where a strange-looking man with torn clothing was hiding. After reconizing the refugee's description, Yugi realized that this man was the hunter.
"What do you want with this man?" Yugi asked.
"I was one of Orochimaru's favorites," the man responded. "He taught me the Living Corpse Reincarnation jutsu, and the man I am after is... special. I need him for my new body." After hearing that this man was one of Orochimaru's favorite people, Yugi reconized him as Scarface. Not wanting any trouble, but not wanting to give away the refugee's postition for nothing, Yugi proceeded carefully.
"And if I did know where he was?" Yugi asked.
"You're trying to get something out of me in return for his location, aren't you?" Scarface asked. "Very clever, boy." Then Atem showed up.
"Yugi, do you have-? Who's this?"
"This is Scarface," Yugi said. "He's looking for a strange-looking man."
"I know that you know where he is," Scarface said. "I'll be willing to teach you anything you want to know, in return for his location."
Yugi and Atem spoke with eachother for a short while, and then returned with their answer. They led Scarface to the cave where the man was, and checked to make sure Migualon was not there. They then allowed Scarface to take the man's body, and Scarface held up his side of the bargin, begining to teach the Souma No Ku twins everything they had yet to learn.

. The story was way good but I cant lie 5D brought in some new cool cards(synchro's and tuners), Gx did nothing except have and alright story.
