I enjoyed Yugioh around that preteen age. But that was when it was first starting and was huge, I played for a few years after that till my friend moved. There was this Chinese market by my house that sold identical replica packs for like three dollars each with all these rare cards. We sold so many to other kids and to this card shop in this plaza. Me and my friend ripped off so many people, I was buying Nintendo Sp's for my girlfriend lmao!!! We were good kids though.
What ruined it for me was that it could never be like the show. I always wanted the monsters to actually come out and attack. I think because I started off with the show first before getting that first Blue-eyes White Dragon starter deck. But yeah, definitely killed it for me. I loved the show for a while till it got to the motorcycle stuff.
I played in one competition at this Toy's R Us. It was weird, like we had a map with duel objectives you had to try and complete. And the the huge store was just filled with tables and people dueling trying to get all the markers checked by judges, the winner got all the pieces of Exodia and the runners up got like a leg or an arm. It was creative idea but a lot of oeople were disappointed, we expected like a round for round tournament with winners and losers. Not some duel club crap.
I don't know about the new style of play. I played up until after the Egyptian gods, but watched the show for a bit.

Opinion on the current metagame: Not gonna lie, I do prefer the old(er) times before this XYZ summoning and Pendulum Summoning shit, but I can atleast respect XYZ summoning to a degree. As it stands now, it can be very very frustrating to try and keep up with. Almost feels like a Six-Samurai/Black-Wing deck type on steroids.

Stopped playing: IRL, hmm, like about 8 years ago. I still fool around from time to time with a friend of mine and on top of that, I play ygopro mainly.
Favourite era: Dang. Original. If by era, you mean show though. I dunno, I like the original also but, I think that the current one is quite nice too (arc-v). GX was cool too. 5D's went downhill after 64 episodes (after the dark signer arc) but it had a nice final arc (jap only). Zexal was...let's not talk about it ok?
My favourite deck: Huh, I like dragons I guess. Anything that relates to dragons. But, I also kinda like gadgets and speaking of gadgets, 2 new gadgets have been announced: The gold and silver gadgets. They are quite nice ^^

And yeah kind of. I did like collecting the cards and looking at them at the time. But when they started having duel disks just dueling anywhere on the show, I wanted that too badly. I always would imagine like dueling one of my friends or someome on a roof, it was always a roof.
For like one episode lol Wasn't it like yugi dueling his grandpa and then immediately after going to duel in a tournament with kiba? It's been a while but I can kind of remember.
Hmmm, I liked 5Ds from start to end and think it even beats original at some things. Oh I played dragons in GX era too. Was one of the most broken things I made. :3
The gadgets look sweet. Looks are a bit different and they remind me more of the Genex monsters than classic gadgets but we. Guess Gadgets are still no1 when it comes to toolboxing.
Well there have been old AR (augmented reality) apps that give u holograms like YGO AR or AndroDisc but the projects never went full operational. You can use it with some cards like Dark Magician and Stardust Dragon so check it out.
Also with all the VR talk lately there is now more potential than ever to make such duels possible. One can only hope that potential gets used.

Oh, I get ya. It's just that I thought the whole tournament thing was dragged out for way too long and the whole mystery surrounding the three dudes (that turned out to be the same dude) was a little messy. I did like the boss monsters they used though. They looked kickass.
But, 5ds is one of the most mature one of the 5 other shows. I think that's mainly cause the main prota is like 17-18 at the start of the series IIRC.

Oh, I my friend played Zane's deck back in the day. Was just as arrogant really. xD New support for it came out in 2015 btw. They have even more aggresion now.
Well, the tournament is actually multiple arcs. I really loved all of it tho. The only weird part was the Kiryu-cowboy story but the rest I loved. And yea it was the most mature with all the discrimination, growing up problems, criminal abuse etc. It's some complex stuff.
Also, 5D's main villain (Z-one) is def the best villain in the whole of YGO. Had the best motivations and was the only one we could really relate to. (Zorc was nuts, Yubel was nuts and they were both monsters so kinda hard to get them ._.)

As for the tournament, some duels where nice like the team taiyou (the poor dudes who have that big ass giant that was compared to exodia in terms of summoning conditions), ragnarok but some where really meh (the guys that had the horses for example).
But, once the tournament reached the moment where the 3 nobles came in, that was fun.
Also, yeah on the akixyusei romance. A bit of a huge troll move at the end though LMAO
