You are right to an extent...psychologically people naturally love themselves. As such, one developes an immediate connection to someone who shares their exact same value set. So when a character appears that acts and thinks in a similar fashion to one's self, that individual forms a liking to the character.

Now naturally this isn't always 100% certain, but it can easily happen with many characters.

Hinata: personality is very similar to mine
Kakuzu: unlike many villains he didn't go and underestimate people/act all arrogant...just got to work.
Han: seemed polite....looked like a boss
