I only just finished watching the episode that bit was so good just casually thinking about life while avoiding all the rocks and then bam solo king is born. I also like the part when he interacted with the crows, though it wasn't clear one could assume this was when itachi first gained some crow jutsu (or around that time at least). Looking forward to the rest of itachi ******* people might just yell "filler!" but at least it's relevant and seems to fit into the timeline of the series.

What the author approves of can either be "canon" or not to the reader. Some ppl have to remind themselves this is the novel that KISHI.. The author, supports as part of his story but to each his own.

The terms of "canon" and "non-canon" do not really exist for the Japanese fandom.

Keeping this in mind, what most consider to be canon would be works that have garnered the author's approval. This is the most consistent definition as nothing in this franchise, including the manga, was created 100% by Kishimoto.

The novels fit under this category, as do the Last/Boruto movies. This time line is to designate where the novels fit in, however, manga chapters (official works of chapter 699 and 700 are included in that) and the Boruto movie you mentioned earlier are included as well. It is an official time line. They are now of the same weight. Which makes sense as Kishimoto has wiped his hands clean of the series for now, so any new material will be considered canon just by having his approval as that is the only way.

In contrast, something which is not canon would be anime fillers without source material (novels, manga, etc) as those are based on nothing that Kishimoto gave approval on and are merely conjured by the animation studio.
