Manga already shows us Itachi can be protected by Yata itself. By Either:

Or standing between it and Susanoo since it has no physical form

What can it do against underground attacks?

He didn't do it when he was his partner in the Akatsuki, he never invaded Orochimaru's hideout despite latter believing former was stronger than Sasuke, and himself. Actually if you pay close attention you will notice Yata mirror has smoke coming from it while the rest of susanoo does not. This implies it was wrapped around Susanoo

That’s nice but still proves nothing, infact smoke is still around Naruto and Killer bee.

Ofcourse there is going to be smoke in front of them. Yata blocked everything directly in front of them meaning the smoke will reside as Yata returns to its normal size. watching the smoke you clearly see the points at which Yata covered them.

Nah, we can even say that the Totsuka blade made the smoke around Bee and Naruto vanish, which is why there’s still some around the Yata mirror. And this one makes a lot more sense.
