WTF does the ninja academy teach?

If Naruto was there for like 3 years and still didn't know wtf chakra natures were or what his was. Like seriously you'd think this is one of the things they would learn early on, maybe have some specialized classes with instructors for each different nature. I mean he couldn't even do basic elemental ninjutsu, an a lot of the characters don't seem to use their chakra natures at all.

I don't get why. My only explanation is that Kishimoto hadn't come up with the idea for them until later on in the series.

I figured that would be a popular answer. Yea he was a crappy student but this seems like the basics to me. Plus, it isn't just Naruto. A lot of the characters don't seem to use elemental ninjutsu at all. For example, all inochikacho use are their secret techs. I get it, it's the base of their strategy but don't you think they would benefit from knowing a few simple offensive/defensive elemental ninjutsu as well?

And you don't learn elements while in the academy.
Also since everyone doesn't have the same nature affinity there is not basic elemental attack.

Well this is why I said it would make sense for them to have specialized classes based on their chakra natures. That would increase the strength of Konoha's ninja quite a bit with all of them at least knowing how to use their nature affinity.

Plus, it doesn't exactly take someone with the same nature to teach something about elemental jutsu. Kakashi taught Naruto about his wind natured chakra. He got some help from Asuma as well, but was on his way to learning the basics already with Kakashi.

It's just like the real world; you have to start at kindergarden and work your way up to college and from there you decide what you want to be and get specialized training for it.

Basic elemental jutsu isn't really super high level. Even if they couldn't really do any decent jutsu yet you'd think they'd at least learn what their chakra nature is considering it was such an easy test. All they needed were those slips of paper.

History of Konoha? Remember that scene where Orochimaru summons Hashirama and Tobirama when attacking Konoha. Those ANBU outside the shield were like "OMG OMG, Who are those two?!?" That was just awkward.
