I like it - Gai is dismissed immediately (or almost so) by pretty much everyone. That is until Itachi. You could brush it off and say well, he's a jonin and a specialist in taijutsu and has knowledge of fighting a sharingan user - but it's easy to see (now) that it's likely more than that.
Given Madara's comments, Itachi's thirst for knowledge about the village and the dynmaics therein I'm sure he's came across this (8 Gates) before - somewhere.

But the kids never seem to know that shit - they had no idea about Kakashi's reputation, or had never heard of Jiraiya/Orochimaru etc - but then again, Itachi was an ANBU captain at 13 and Sasuke/Naruto/Sakura were... obnoxious little genin brats.

I agree with this too. Itachi was actually one of the few shinobi in the manga who actually respected his opponents and would actually overestimate them at times. Lol

Itachi knew about Guy's skills because he lived in the village for over a decade and was an informant that knew about all the powerful ninja in the village. He knew Guy was strong because he knew he trained to use the 8 gates. He also knew that he was the primary inheritor of the justu, as we all could deduce, and thus knew he was really strong.

Its not that Itachi knew his power exactly and was aware of all of his jutsu or anything. He simply knew that Guy trained to use a jutsu that has very little limitation. That is all.
