I wouldn't sacrifice things that aren't mine to sacrifice. If it's me or the world, I'd like to think I'd choose the world. But I don't know how I would behave in a situation like that.

Whatever your selfish desire may be. even if it has selfless intentions people are still going to disagree with you, accuse you, blame you and hate you. The best thing you can do is keep going forward until you can go no more.

The more important question is: what is your payoff? If you die forgotten, unloved, etc. I'm sure most people would not make that choice. They would put their selfish desires first.

However, if they were credited and revered, it would probably be pretty easy to say yes. All humans have a degree of self-righteousness and desire for recognition and acceptance, no matter how you look at it.
