The instinct of a parent is much stronger than anything else; they will overwhelm you with strength and force your life to continue if necessary. A child's instinct is much weaker and can't hold a candle to that of a nurturer.

Part of any instinct is to put best foot forward... the whole child protecting parent is puerile and something that a child will grow out of when they have reached a certain degree of maturity and wisdom in adulthood.
Hmm.. I don't think that my Mother would be stronger (physically) in that case. It depends on the situation really. Also, I have a handful of siblings, who I could not watch over like my Parents do, so I'd think of the bigger picture. There'd be immens difficulties without parents, especially when you have very young siblings.

So again, it depends in what kind of living situation you are in. As for the last part, you are right about reaching that certain degree of maturity but some people have it very early because of the events they witnessed in Life. Time & things you witness throughout your Life will tell what degree of maturity you're in. Of course a 10 year old would, most likey, not have reached that state of maturity yet.

My 60 year old father and 58 year old mother wouldn't agree to it. Losing my big bro was big enough of a shock to my mom, I can't fathom the pain of either of them living on through the sacrifice of their son. So no, I won't let either of them live on with that pain.

On the other hand, bar the above I would.

Nope, I wouldn't. My parents wouldn't want me to either. I would try desperately to save them, even risking my life, but to knowingly choose death is a no.

Sorry if that makes me sound heartless, but its the truth.

No. I would not risk my own life for some ***** who left me when I was 5 and haven't seen her since to even pay for child support. I would never give my life for some deadbeat who couldn't even be a proper mother.

I never really knew my parents because they died when I was younger, but if they were still alive I would definitely give up my life for my parents, regardless of their wishes for me, because they gave me life and I'd do anything to give them the same.

@Bold Then you have no idea of the power of the maternal/paternal instinct. No matter how physically strong a parent normally, that very strength that prevails in dire situations will leave you looking weak.

I'm not sure if my mom could handle her children dying.

My dad would probably have a hard time with it as well but might respect my decision.

I personally would hate it if I let myself live instead of my parents. So I would have to choose to sacrifice myself. It mostly depends on how I think my mom would react.

In the end, I want the best for them.

That's an overstatement.

If I was an only child I would probably say no, but I have siblings so yes, I would.

I know losing a child is a parent's worst nightmare, but I wouldn't want my brothers and sisters losing their parent's.

I don't know about anyone, but for me, it's a hell yeah, i'd gladly give my life for the strong woman who gave birth to me, raised me, and what-not. But, she wouldn't let me do it though, that's the type of person she is.
Doesn't get better than this. I'd give up my life for either my parents without a second thought. They would hate for me to do so but I wouldn't be able to live my life with a clear conscious thinking I could have saved my parents and didn't attempt to do so. I'd rather be dead.

Yes, I would.

However, with that being said this depends on a few factors for people in general. The answer cannot be the same for everyone. The main one being were the parents good to their child. And another being the possible death cause itself.

My parents are wonderful to me and I'd give up my life in a heartbeat. Even though they would never want me to do so and another death would cause them great agony.

I'm also assuming that the op is meant for a scenario in which natural death (such as that from old age) is omitted. Since we all have to die someday and dying for a relative who lived a good, fulfilling, long life would be pointless since that's just their time to go.

I like my parents, and giving up your life for them is nobel, but... looking at it from their perspective, then I probably wouldn't. No parent should ever have to bury their child. It goes against the natural order of things, and would cause more pain than if you were burying them. Nevertheless, a lot of these situations lead to spur of the moment and instinctive decisions, so I might end up doing, even though I don't believe that it's the right decision.

I know for a fact my dad would ride out(die) for me. If I attempted to die for him he's the type that would push me out the way and die so I can live.

My mom I think would be too afraid to do anything and I would end up dying to protect her. Which I would gladly do.
