What caught my attention in part 1 was Sasuke, he was the main reason for why I started reading Naruto, because I always found him an interesting character, so I wanted to know what would happen to him, if he was going to come back, turn evil or die. Without him I would probably not care too much about Naruto.
In part 2 Itachi and the truth about the Uchiha massacre came out as the best plot twist, what made the story even more interesting and Itachi one of the best and most memorable characters from Naruto. Then we had Madara and Obito, two important characters for the plot, with Madara being an awesome villain and Obito's/Kakashi's background being a nice story.
