That's only what Naruto says but it is actually factually incorrect, which just only verifies that Naruto has a man crush and obsession with Sasuke. Sasuke was IN NO WAY AT ALL Naruto's first bond. Naruto's first bond was Hiruzen, followed by Ayame and Teuchi, afterwhich it was Choji, Shikamara, and Kiba, with whom he used to play with in the academy, after which it was Iruka. He never had a bond with Sakura or Sasuke at the academy, he just had an obsession with them, isn't it ironic that Sasuke was the most popular guy in the academy and top of the class while Sakura was the smartest and most popular girl? Just how shallow is this guy?

So he had this "coverup" hate or rivarly as you want to name it. But deep down inside, they had respect for each other.

Naruto's bond with Sasuke is his deepest bond without any question to that. While yes, Naruto would definitely save Shikamaru, I don't think he would go to the extremes he has gone to with Sasuke. (Or with Gaara, but that was a similar case due to sharing a similar backstory that knows loneliness with him.) In comparison, Naruto's bond with Shikamaru is pretty much the closest thing to a "normal" friendship that Naruto has going for him.

That being said, Naruto's friendship with Shikamaru is one of the most important things in the series to me since I love their whole smart guy/idiot hero dynamic. Personally I care about their bond more than I do Naruto and Sasuke's bond but anyways.

Good question. IDK, I'd like to think now that we know they are reincarnated brothers that Naruto couldn't really help his obsession with Sasuke bc they had this deeper connection than he had with anyone else. Maybe, whiile he would do to great lengths to save Shikamaru, he would've eventually come to his senses whereas with Sasuke there was something spiritual that connected them.
