Would it have been better if Nagato didn't Rinnei Tensei the Konoha fodder?

I know it sounds kind of heartless, but would it have been better if Nagato didn't Rinnei Tensei the Konoha fodder he killed? I mean with the entire world on the line due to Obito's plan, Nagato was one of the few at the time who could have stood up to Obito during that part of the manga. If he was thinking big picture he could have done a lot more good letting the konoha fodder guys die and instead going back to the rain country with Konan and getting ready for the war. Possibly no Rinnegan for Obito then...

I was relieved when Kakashi came back. The story has turned out just fine IMO.

Yes, it would have been better. Not necessarily for the reasons you listed, but just because it would have been better overall.

If Kishi decided to stop the series at the Pain arc, it would have been a pretty great ending.
