Seeing as how good a tagteam Kakashi and Guy do you think Asuma and Yamato can work to a lesser scale of course but still those two would be a handful.

On ninja that dont defy the logic like the recent chapters? Yes. They would make a good team dealing with
genning
chuuning
s-jounin
jounin
But they would have a hard time or even loose against s-class ninja and beyond.

Just like BlacLord said, Yamato could cover Asuma with his mid-long range jutsu and compliment his short-range.
Plus, they would have a great variety of elemental natures: Fire, Wind, Water, Earth and Wood.

They would and have good defenses, long range, CQC, weaponary and versatilaty...

Though Gai and Kakashi work well mostly due to friendship/past ecperiences and rivalry not just with completing skills.
