Having mixed thoughts, I'm thinking about buying 2 8gb sticks and upgrade to 16gb compared to my current 8GB, is this a good idea? Apart from future proof durr.

Probably is worth it. If you're even considering it, the projects you do on your computer or console take tons of ram. If you feel it's time for an upgrade, go for it.

The question is... do you have a 32 bit system or 64. if 32, then no, you can't use more than 4 gigs

LOL I said I already have 8gb, I think it's obvious I have an 64 bit OS.

OT: Thanks for the answers I'm considering it.

I think you will need it, but not anytime soon, for games specifically, the requirements is getting higher every year, for a game like Dying Light right now, 8GB of RAM is recommended, although it's not a major requirements like 4GB VRAM. I believe it will be a year or maybe two years before we see a 16GB RAM requirement, but who knows? maybe with Oculus Rift things will get a bit dicy ._.

It all depends on what you do on your PC. For gaming in general 8GB is enough for the moment. Just look at your task manager or equivalent, when you are running all your softwares for some time and then build your own opinion if you need to upgrade it or not.
