For Smash alone? Absolutely not. Repetitive, your friends will bore of it if played beyond moderation, and a system isn't worth it in moderation for a single game. If you're thinking "Well I'd probably play other games" then I have a wall of text for you:

I would advise against Wii U in general because of costs. Controllers make the money for Nintendo and Wii U is by far the most costly system for what most people intend. The 4 Wii-mote + the stick is a huge price tag, for many games it's unbearable for most people without a pro controller, and the awful brick that comes with the system.

Then there's compatibility. Not always an issue but sometimes huge. Some games you'll want Pro controllers (Smash), others you want the Wii-mote + stick (Skyward Sword), and others don't work with the tablet or pro controllers (Mario Party 10...and don't tell me bowser party is even worth playing).

For most games, you have a minimum +$150 investment to even play with friends, then you have the compatibility issues, then you have the fact that for many games anything besides the Pro Controller is just a hassle.

Mario Kart 8 and the Zeldas are the only games with reasonable cost and fun to play with friends. Mario Kart 8 only requires Wii-motes for optimal playing, and Zeldas are single player and 1 stick is a minor cost.

It is the highest cost system I've ever seen to be able to access all of its features I kid you not. But if you're cool with the cost, the games are phenomenal and perfect for small parties WITH the ideal setup.
