Woody Woodpecker is set to swoop into cinemas, with Universal planning a big-screen outing for the lovable bird.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal's animation house Illumination Entertainment - responsible for Despicable Me and the forthcoming Dr. Seuss' The Lorax - will oversee the project.
They are already in talks with Blades of Glory scribes John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky to pen the script, with plans afoot to modernize the character while at the same time launching a franchise.
Initially voiced by cartoon legend Mel Blanc, Woody Woodpecker first appeared onscreen in 1940, while Universal bought the rights to the character in 1985.
