You need to understand that wood is a powerful element, a life energy element. It can be used for both offense and defense, for restraining and capturing, and sealing. Woods can be harder than metal, it takes a strong force of piercing and sawing to cut through trees. There are trees that humans still can't cut even with recent technology. the only force to be really effective against it is fire. If wood could hold out, and captured the nine tails than it is more amazing than your little mind can understand.

It's not the most powerful, but the best versatile jutsu to possess. You haven't seen enough of Hashirama's wood technique to judge. All you've seen was Yamato using it, but he even said it was little compared to the real one. And wood can't control a tailed beast, but can restrain it against its will. Have you guys heard of Yggdrasil (whether you did or not), it is a norse mythology that it was the world's tree that existed nine worlds. This same mythology is used in Japanese folklore, maybe to my understanding and it's just a self opinion that Hashirama used it to hold the nine tails in place so he could fight madara, and it's the same technique he use to capture the other tails he had.

So yes wood is not the strongest jutsu but is nonetheless a very powerful one to possess. Possessing it and use it effectively, you will always be a step ahead of your opponent. And tree is considered to be the sustain of life in every culture. Hashirama's chakra was life energy itself with his senju blood combined, that's why Madara,Tobi, Orochimaru, Danzo, and Kabuto wants/wanted it. With power to capture, and restrain beast, you would easily be able to control them, it's like a chain. That's why it's that strong. How many shinobi can escape a forest like jutsu, think about it before commenting back.
