The reason why you would get in trouble if you hit a women is because, as you have already stated, men are naturally physically stronger than women. You wouldn't get laughed at if you called the police, they would be an invesigation. Why? because you probably wouldn't call unless what she was doing was legitly hurting you (and its there job/ the law for them too) I mean think about it... how many times has a girl hit you and it not really hurt or bother you? Not to mention girls use the expression of a slap on the arm as flirting now a days.
True. As for the rest- it's complicated - many (not all ) men themselves do not know what they want.
Many of them feel superior because of traditional role of being earning member and used to ignored the support and all the work women did at home because they were not getting paid for it.
If the both members earn the living standard is improved. And men like it too that the monetary burden on them is shared. At the same time they also resent independent women because now they get competition and they cannot claim that kind of superiority which came with being the sole breadwinner of the family. Women stepped up in their world and these men are lost because they are used to not seeing them as an equal for centuries.
