Author's Note:
What a relief! Finally a short chapter, eh? I hope everyone enjoys reading it as much as I did writing it! ^_^

Chapter 5:

~Dýri?~

“Zane! Wake up, boy! Don’t do this to me! Wake up!” Sam shook his son in hopes of breaking him out of whatever this was.

“Dýri…Dýri…” he just kept saying that under his breath, lying unconscious on his back.

Sam wasn’t sure what to do, and he didn’t know if this was because of something that happened last night. He picked his son up, carried him out of there and brought him back to their home up on the cliff. Several workers were clearing the winding road up to the top and several spots were dangerous due to giant chunks that were taken out, but he managed.

“Zane!” Sarah Wolfe cried as her husband carried their son through the front door. “Is he okay?! What happened?!”

“Calm down, he’ll be fine. I think he just needs some rest.” Sam was merely saying that for her benefit, this was something to be a little more than just worried about.

Bria walked in to see her brother laying out on the table and thought he was dead. She screamed, dropping the firewood in her arms and rushed over to him. Sam assured her that he was fine, and finally had his wife and daughter breathing normally again.

“Dýri…”

“What’s he saying?” Bria asked.

“Don’t know, he just started after collapsing in Saal Ur…”

“You mean you took our son into the Ancient Hall?” Sarah scolded, “Filling his head with that nonsense already, I see.”

“It’s not nonsense, woman. That is the legacy of our ancestry, all the way back to the Atten who settled here.” Sam said, grabbing a bucket to fetch some water.

“What? A band of thieves and brigands deserve our honor now? You know very well how I feel about it, Samuel Roland Wolfe.”

“Oh, be quiet already.” Sam told her as he walked out of the house; he knew better than to close the door while she was talking though.

“Don’t walk away from me! I’m talking to you, ya’ big…ya’ big oaf!” She shouted after him, but didn’t feel like leaving her poor child to chase him down and drive her point home. “Bria, be a dear and get a pillow for his head. I’m going to see if I can figure out what’s wrong with him.”

“Dýri…”

Bria kept thinking that Zane’s unconscious muttering must have meant something, but the word was hard to make out. She looked back at her brother for a moment, and then continued on. Outside and just around to the right of the house, Sam was pumping water into the bucket. He kept looking back to see if his wife was following.

“Damn that woman, always on about one thing or another, and it’s never good enough.” The man whispered to himself mostly, he wasn’t going to be caught saying anything where she could possibly hear it. “Try to teach my son a little history, but ‘oh no, our ancestors are barbarians, why do you want our son to be a hero’.” He said, mockingly.

“Sam,” Mathias said in his usual smug tone, “The family needs you to speak; we demand to hear what you have to say about all this…about your son.”

He didn’t even turn to look at him, and said nothing.

“Sam, did you hear me?!”

He finished pumping the water and lifted the bucket to return to his house as his rival approached in annoyance. Sam greeted him with a staring contest, their faces only inches apart. Neither one said anything at first; it was Sam who broke the silence once he let Mathias know he wasn’t playing.

“My son is lying on the table ill,” he said in low but daring voice, “Excuse me while I tend to him.”

Mathias was about to say something as Sam walked away, then thought better of it and simply left. Sarah used the water with a rag as a compress, but Zane was sweating profusely. The boy kept saying the same thing over and over again, and it was starting to become more frequent. All the three of them could really do was watch him suffer through it.

The only thing he kept seeing was the cat, either before, during or after the transformation. It was harmless and white as snow in regular form, but turned into a dark and menacing beast. In his visions, the kitten wasn’t afraid anymore, it was focused on a goal of some sort. It must have been in combat, but Zane couldn’t see the opponent. He realized these images were not part of what took place the other night.

“Dýri…” He said again. “Dýri…Dýri…” and now he was getting louder. “Dýri… Dýri….. Dýri!”

With that last yell, Zane snapped out of it and sat straight up. It was a bit disconcerting, but everyone was relieved as well.

“You had us worried there for a moment,” Sam said as he indicated to the others to let him breathe for a moment. “How ya’ feelin’, boy?”

“There was…” he stopped when he saw Bria’s concerned face and couldn’t resist. “You were actually worried about me, weren’t you…” he said in a teasing tone.

“You wish,” Bria quickly said before throwing a wet rag at him and walking off.

The parents looked at each other and shrugged, it seemed like he was just fine if he could tease his sister.

“So what happened? One moment we’re in that really old place and now we’re here…”

“Do you remember anything that happened at all after you fell down?” Sam asked.

“Some flashes of something, but I don’t know what.”

“Did you feel any pain?”

“Nothing, and I feel fine.” He said while getting off the table.

“You kept saying this one word over and over…” Sarah butted in.

“Well? What was I saying?”

“We were hoping you could tell us,” Sam said, taking the conversation back from his overly concerned wife. “Most of the time we could hardly understand it at all, and even when you screamed it at the end there it didn’t make much sense.”

“Duric, Duri, something like that?” Sarah wasn’t letting her husband win this one. “Listen, sweaty, that place your father took you to isn’t important. Don’t pay attention to those silly stories, you hear?”

“’Silly stories’, she says, ‘not important’, she says…humph,” Sam exclaimed as he poured himself some mead.

“Oh no you don’t, mister. Put that mug down this instant and start explaining why you didn’t tell me my son was released! Don’t you dare start drinking this early…”

In a moment of what Zane thought to be true bravery, his dad interrupted what was turning into a long speech. “Woman, I have something I have to do.” With that, he turned and abruptly left. He knew he was just making it worse for himself later, but this prolonging seemed to be worth it.

“Your father is so…irritating…” Sarah half said to the kids.

Sam joined a gathering group of Wolfe family members not to far away. They were already discussing the current events and what was felt individually. Most of them were first cousins to him personally, and some others were second or even third. The only person of importance that wasn’t there was Elder Damien, despite the fact that they were almost right outside his house.

At first they were all taking somewhat quietly among themselves, but stopped when Sam approached.

“I know what you are all thinking, but I assure you that everything’s under control.” He said, facing the crowd.

That caused a few to start up again and raise their voices in concern.

“That boy is in your house, you should have just left him in the jail away from us until after the trial!” Mathias spoke up.

“He’s my son, you…” the man stopped himself from saying anything out loud, but it went through his mind. “The council will decide his fate tomorrow. Let him be for now. That’s all I have to say.” He then pushed his way past them and headed straight for the pub to drink in peace.

Obviously drinking was really the important thing he had to do... I just love putting secret messages in here. ^_^ If you find this one first, there's a 20 kumi reward.

Love the Family's little scuffle there, and the Father out of all of them is my favourite.

Another Brilliant Chapter Sam :D

I have a pretty cool picture in my head of Sam carrying Zane through the door xd

Yeah, I'm focusing on building Zane's family life. I'm also trying to drive home his dad's personality and how that affects him in the future. ^_^
