*the pleasant scenery you thought you were in fades away to reveal a generic creepy forest; dead trees, cobwebs, crows, all that. A cloaked man with piercings steps out from behind a tree, his body just as cold and lifeless*

So, you wish to master the illusionary arts? I hope you're mentally prepared, this is nothing like what you've learned before. Before we begin i need you to tell me all you can about Genjutsu.

*he leans with his back against the tree and arms crossed as he awaits your reply*

I stand with my arms folded as well, surprised for a brief moment at the change of scenery.

Within the NV Genjutsu are illusionary techniques which require handseals and chakra similar to ninjutsu. They do not cause physical harm but rather manipulate the flow of chakra from the target's brain, causing a disruption/altering of the senses. Personally I don't really see myself using genjutsu in battle, it just doesn't seem like it would fit into my fighting style. In any case, genjutsu within our RP has a strict set of rules and guidelines that must be followed, specifically referring to how to break out of the illusion, how to properly recognize when one's been caught within one, etcetera.

*your report earns a nod of approval from Pein*

Your basic knowledge is acceptable. Now we delve deeper. As you know, Genjutsu affects the chakra flow of an opponent's brain but how does one get to that point? In order to produce a successful illusion you want to mold your chakra a certain way. Similarly to how someone creates Doton chakra for earth elemental techniques, the chakra used for Genjutsu is focused at a certain wavelength which in turn causes the target's chakra flow to become unbalanced and its natural wavelength changed to induce the illusion you want. Typically handseals are used to help in molding your chakra but it can be done through a direct sensory experience such as light, sounds, and scents that vary among techniques. These are known as "triggers". Controlling someone's chakra flow is a difficult task so the caster of an illusion must be near the target for it to have any effect. That's why it is rare for Genjutsu to exceed mid range. Any questions so far?

If you say so. Then let's move on to something more practical. As you might know already, i'm not instructing you alone.

He stands beside you and motions to 5 other men walking into view. They are somewhat different in appearance but bear the same Rinnegan.

Whenever you cast a genjutsu, one of them will be your target. My doujutsu can detect when the illusion is placed and how it appears through their eyes, so i'll know if anything is wrong. We'll start off with a basic genjutsu only affecting sight. It is cast over an extensive area, an invisible field, and anyone who enters is make to believe their surroundings appear different than they actually are. The change could be minor like a sign saying something else, or major like a forest appearing to be a desert. There are many possibilities but changing how the terrain looks is the limit. Give it a shot.

p.s. Avoid being too vague with your reply. I want to know exactly what's going on.

I lock eyes with the Deva path standing before me and begin channeling chakra in a particular wavelength toward him. This causes his chakra flow to become unbalanced, his natural wavelength changing in order to induce an illusion wherein the target finds himself at the center of a grassy clearing, complete with blue skies and a bright sun.

The immediate giveaway for the technique is that it fails to manipulate the senses other than sight. The target would be able to discern that they are within the genjutsu through inconsistencies in all other stimuli besides that of sight.

Good, you're picking up on it quickly. Let's see if you can handle sets of two. For this jutsu, form a handseal and throw a paper bomb at your target as you cast one illusion on him. The illusion should hide the paper bomb in what appears to be a clone of yourself running at him. Techniques like this one demonstrate how one could combine an illusionary attack with a real one. Just remember its range is limited. There's your target.

Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: 20
Description: The user does one handseal and throws a paper bomb at the enemy. The enemy, trapped in a genjutsu will see a clone of the user advancing upon him. As the paper bomb reaches the enemy, it explodes

Next, cast a genjutsu on your target who should see multiple clones of you emerge from the terrain. While a normal clone would disappear when attacked, the target would see the clones he'd attacked merely divide into more clones. This is an excellent diversionary technique because you can move among the clones and attack while making it appear your copies are attacking. You could even hide behind an obstruction and let your target waste energy attacking illusions. See if you can fool him.

Standing short range of the Pein that approaches short range of me I form one handseal and throw a paper bomb toward it. The illusion is set, causing the target to believe that a clone of mine is running toward him. In reality, the paper bomb explodes once it reaches the appropriate distance.

Now facing toward the Asura path who begins to charge at me, I place him in an illusion where a plethora of clones emerge from the ground. In his confusion I proceed to sneak up behind him and land a blow to the back of the neck.

Question about Mist Servant: I can dictate what the clones appear to do, correct? Have them faking handseals, etc.

Answer: Correct

Pein looks on as the genjutsu are cast, taking note of how simple they are. It doesn't take much concentration to tell what is real and what isn't just by the lack of detail.

A passable attempt to say the least. You'll need to work harder if you want to fool anybody with those illusions. For the next technique form five handseals before casting an illusion on your target. To him, your body should appear to dissolve into many cherry blossom petals. That's not all. Those petals should surround the target, obstructing his vision as well. In reality you are free to move with your target unaware. Take him down with stealth.

Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

Here is a technique that uses your opponent's fears against them. Perform two handseals before casting an illusion on your target. He will see leaves begin to spin around him and eventually fall to the floor. A moment later, he should witness his greatest fear right in front of him. Such a sight should make the target falter or faint if the illusion is especially traumatic. Remember that its effectiveness varies from person to person. Without knowing the enemy's fears, the chances he reacts the way you want become slim. See that overweight guy? His should be easy to guess.

Apologies for the late reply.

I face the appropriate target and begin by forming five hand-seals, placing them in an illusion wherein my body devolves into a magnificent array of cherry blossom petals. The petals quickly surround the Pein, moving around him in a circular motion and thick enough so that he is unable to see his surroundings. In reality, I will have drawn a kunai, treading lightly and a distance so as to not make noise, moving behind him in an attempt to slash the side of his neck.

Turning toward the Preta path now who's stomach rumbles loudly, I perform two hand-seals, causing the Preta path to see green leaves spinning around him. The swirling begins to slowly subside as the Preta path suddenly finds himself looking at a banquet in the distance filled with the most mouth-watering delicacies that he enjoys most, all of the other Pein's eating at the table and partaking. The food shortly thereafter abruptly begins to mold and become maggot infested, spoiled and entirely unappetizing.

Pein watches the pair of defeated Paths get hauled away as he collects his thoughts. His student's genjutsu skill has progressed at a decent rate so he should be ready for the next stage. Turning back to his student, Pein demands his full attention.

Excellent. Now that we've covered basic illusions you're going to learn how to break or release them. This is a crucial knowledge for any ninja so listen closely. As you know, genjutsu works by altering a person's chakra flow. To return his chakra flow to its normal state, another imbalance must occur to dispel current ones and allow his chakra to reset itself. Three basic methods exist to do just that:

Pain (lol): Possibly the easiest but most dangerous release method is producing pain. Like waking a person in slumber, it is meant to shock the body which alters his physical energy. This in turn creates a spike in his chakra, breaking the illusion. The level of pain needed to break an illusion increases with higher ranked illusions. Here's a basic guideline.

*hands you a scroll*
- D Rank Genjutsu: Chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu)
- C Rank Genjutsu: Low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek
- B Rank Genjutsu: Low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle
- A Rank Genjutsu: High ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold
- S Rank Genjutsu: EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off
Some ninja like myself are more accustomed to or resistant to pain, so this method won't be as effective for us. Hence, we move on to the next method.

Foreign chakra/energy: Basically, having chakra transferred to you by an ally or taking in any foreign energy such as natural energy into your chakra flow will unbalance it and thus release you from genjutsu. The last method is most important.

Kai/Chakra Surge- This one is meant to alter your spiritual energy through sheer willpower. Two ways to do this is through the Kai technique or causing a high chakra surge in your chakra flow. To break illusions with a chakra surge you must release large amounts of chakra from your whole body using a suitable jutsu. It should be at least one rank higher than the illusion so the surge overcomes the illusion. Raw chakra techniques must be at least two ranks higher.

As for the Kai technique, i will teach it to you now. First, form a handseal and focus on your chakra flow. Through willpower alone bring your flow to a halt before suddenly starting it up again with a surge of chakra. This will disturb your spiritual energy and get rid of the illusion cast on you as long as the chakra spent is equal to the chakra used for the genjutsu. Not all genjutsu can be broken with this technique. They include paralysis type genjutsu and Mangekyo Sharingan techniques. Your skill also determines the level of genjutsu you can break, higher skill allowing you to break high level genjutsu. If you're ready, try and break this illusion. Kokuangyo no Jutsu!

*darkness swirls around you, reducing your sight to nothing*

Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 30
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes one handseal, causing the opponent to believe they have been trapped in a world of infinite darkness, where their sense of sight is useless. It is capable of affecting multiple targets within range. However, it does not negate their other senses.

( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion

As Pein finishes his explanation I nod, signaling my being ready. The world slowly begins to swirl until I am surrounded by an absolute darkness. Remembering the lesson that was taught to me I instinctively form a single handseal and focus on my chakra flow, and with the use of sheer willpower I stop the flow of chakra from within my body and spike it up, causing a surge of chakra that releases me from the illusion cast onto me.

Good job. Combating genjutsu efficiently depends on the method you deem appropriate for the situation. The next genjutsu is more deceptive than others. It is cast on a moving target who is made to believe he is moving in a strait line but in reality travels in circles. This is accomplished by shifting the image of the victim's destination without them realizing it has moved, making them follow it back to where they started. If the victim travels in circles for hours, they'll become exhausted. Try it out.

*points to a Pein who sees a ramen shop in the distance and runs toward it*

( Kori Shinchū no Jutsu ) - Sly Mind Affect Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid

Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion on the opponent that makes them believe they are travelling in a straight line, when instead they are moving in circles. This is only effective on moving opponents. If the opponent travels in the circle for hours, they will be exhausted.

Now i'll teach you a technique used for interrogation. You will place your hand on a stationary target and disrupt their chakra flow. Use your control over their senses to mentally weaken the target and convince them to give away information, similar to a truth serum. It will only work on a target at least two ranks beneath you. Here's you victim.

*throws a random Ame ninja before you. He's tied up so he can't move*

Turning toward the Pein that's running toward the Ramen shop, I cast him in an illusion where he believes that he's on a straight course to his destination. In reality, he would begin traveling in circles over and over again, continuing to do so as I slowly and nonchalantly make my way over to the Ramen stand and chow down on a nice hot bowl of Ramen.

After this is done and I'm told what to do next, an Ame ninja is thrown before me. I walk up to it, apprehensively at first, and place my hand on his head. I use my chakra to manipulate his senses, mentally weakening him to a breaking point. He gives in and tells me all about the embarrassing drunken moments you had at the Ame Christmas party last year as I chuckle slightly, more surprised by the fact that I had successfully executed the technique than the information being told to me.

We had a deal Greg! Uh, good job. Tell no one. <.< >.> Now i want you to cast an illusion on your enemy, making him see a massive fireball descending from the sky that engulfs them in fire. Moving on, this is another genjutsu involving illusionary clones. In this illusion you would create a clone that will run at the enemy, jump, and explode into many sakura petals. This serves to obscure the enemy's vision and allow you to attack while he is distracted. Try following up the technique with an attack of your choice. There's your target.

It's time i introduced genjutsu layering, the overlap of one genjutsu with another on the same target. Basically, two genjutsu that do not conflict with each other may be layered in order to merge their effects or stack them. The most important rule to remember is that when layering genjutsu, the second genjutsu must be of equal rank or lower than that of the first one, else the lower ranked genjutsu will be overpowered and broken.
To release yourself from layered genjutsu you could release each one individually or both at the same time if the release method is strong enough to break the highest ranked genjutsu involved.

You're learning this now so you can fully understand the next technique that follow the same concept. Take this, it's description is very detailed already. Use it on me.

(Magen: Nijū Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu) Demonic Illusion: Double False Surroundings Technique
Type: Supplmentary
Rank: B-Rank
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra: 20
Damage: N/A
Description:
The user will do a sequence of 3 handseals, putting his opponents under a double layered Genjutsu. The user is able to create false surroundings to fool his targets, much like the simpler version of the technique. However, the illusion is in fact layered. If the opponent manages to release the first one, he will then feel the effects of the second illusion. If, for example, the first illusion is that of a desert and the second that of a forest, upon releasing the first one, the opponent will see the desert fade away while the forest appears around him, making him think he dispelled the illusion while in essence he is still caught in one. Each illusion is equivalent to C-Rank and both are casted at the same time. While normal releases will release only one illusion at a time, a strong enough pain or an external source of chakra can dispel both at the same time.

B-Ranks, I never thought this day would come.

Turning toward the Pein that are lounging about the training grounds carelessly, I cast an illusion on one of them wherein they believe a massive fireball is descending toward them from the sky. The Pein, in reality, is frantically attempting to quell the supposed fire that has engulfed him by rolling on the ground, much to my amusement.

Suddenly I take note of the pointing gesture you make and find myself in the presence of a Pein with a blade heading toward me. Focusing my chakra, I create an illusionary clone that proceeds to head toward the Pein. As it reaches the appropriate distance it jumps and explodes into a baptism of cherry blossom petals, causing the Pein to become disoriented. Simultaneous to this, I will have moved toward the Pein in an arc approaching him from behind, making sure to tread lightly, with a kunai drawn. I plunge the kunai into the target's back expertly and twist it, causing him to collapse.

Finally, I turn toward you and swiftly perform a sequence of three hand-seals, causing you to fall prey to an illusion wherein you appear to be surrounded by dense rain forest. The second illusion, if the first is to be broken, takes on the appearance of our own training ground.

So to release oneself from a layered genjutsu such as this one, would B-rank pain be enough to break both simultaneously, or would it have to be A-rank pain? I'm leaning toward B-rank pain to release since each illusion within this particular technique is equivalent to a C-rank.

Impressive. If you're a sword user you'll appreciate the next technique. Simply wave your sword back and forth with the blade pointed down to cast an illusion on the enemy seeing it. The illusion should create multiple images of your arm waving in mid-air which resemble the branches of a willow tree blowing in the wind. This confuses your enemy your so can cut him down. Sorry for the late reply.

As I approach the Pein with a sword in hand, I draw my own and begin to wave it in front of me slowly and methodically. This visual movement induces the Pein in an illusion wherein he appears to see a multitude of waving arms before him. With the genjutsu set, I quickly push off with my right leg and dash toward the target in one quick burst, and, once in range, I attempt to perform a diagonal slash from his left shoulder down to his lower right side.

Moving on to the next exercise, I approach the Pein who appears to be salivating over a cooking slab of meat. Performing the hand seals of Dog, Hare, Snake and Ram, I place him in an illusion where he sees multiple bean vines growing from the ground. The vines wrap themselves around him and lift him up into the air, as a bean pod shoots up into the air and opens up before him, revealing me, ready to strike a deadly blow. In reality, he is simply immobilized, giving me the perfect opportunity to snatch up the slab of meat and crush on it. Yummy.

Finally, I move on to the other Pein that is heartlessly trampling on a flower bed. I approach him and proceed to induce him in an illusion where he appears to be in the center of a massive flower bud. The flower bud suddenly explodes, causing him such mental stress that he collapses on the ground.

Well done. The next genjutsu is similar to String Bean Binding Illusion so it should sound familiar. After forming five handseals cast an illusion on your target in which your body appears to dissolve into mist. A tree will then rapidly grow behind the enemy and bind him to it with wooden tendrils. You would appear to emerge from the tree poised to attack the immobilized enemy. Keep in mind the range of this technique, it's shorter compared to the one you learned earlier. Punish him.

Now we move on to a simple illusion. Just cast an illusion on your target where snakes appear beneath your enemy and constrict them, thus immobilizing them in reality. On command you may have the snakes crush the enemy's body to inflict mental stress. If you happen to be a snake user, your enemy would have a harder time doubting the illusion. Give it a shot.

Description: The user puts the opponent into a genjutsu which has snakes appear beneath the opponent to constrict them and with the users command, they crush the opponent. In reality, the opponent is immobilized and takes damage due to the stress on his mind.

Another simple illusion: Here you will make your enemy see purple flowers appear from the ground in front of you. They damage your enemy and paralyze them temporarily if he's near. (yeah its vague but seeing it myself didn't help) Watch out.

*sends a Pein at you for a little in-fighting*
