Eastern Mountains
Xavier lay in the middle of a meadow, far from where he had left Abi and Shane. He rolled onto his side before getting up. He looked around. Nothing except craggy mountains in the dis-tance. Experiencing what Abi had felt in the past, Xavier struggled not to shed a tear. Seeing every detail, he could probably remember more than she did. He clicked his fingers to teleport back.

Nothing happened. My powers must be down. I’ll have to wait a couple of hours. He thought. The day was coming to an end, and Xavier had to find somewhere safe to sleep before night fell. He thought about Abi’s past. Her remembered the little boy’s name and figured out who took him. He knew those men. He knew where to find them. He knew how to kill them. ‘I’m doing this for Abi, not just for me,’ he said, ‘and I promise, I’ll get Emori back.’

Every Man for Themselves
Abi and Shane were walking back to where they came in a failed effort to find Xavier. They were asking everyone – from swordsmen to enchanters (they were so desperate they absolutely had to, even with the strange glare they gave them).

‘What is with them? They take one look at us and look like they’re going to stare us to death!’ Abi whispered to Shane.

‘They’re just jealous that we’ve got two eyes unlike them. They’ve got a hard time seeing.’ As he spoke one of them ran straight into them, knocking Abi over. He glared at her then walked on. He walked up to his girlfriend or something and smiled at her as soon as he had finished terrorizing them like it was nothing.

Abi felt dizzy. Shane held her for support. Without realising, a tear trickled down her cheek. She wiped it away quickly before Shane would notice.

‘What do you mean “jealous that they have only one eye”?’ She said narrowing her eyes at the enchanter.

‘They actually have one eye originally and they have to work hard so that their master will grant them their second eye. They hate us because we were just born with two eyes.’

‘Wow. Sad story,’ she took a deep breath, ‘Listen, I think it would be better splitting up. We can’t find Xavier if we’re just distracting one another,’ she paused for a moment, trying to avoid looking into Shane’s disappointed eyes, ‘You’re…um…holding me back – but once I find Xavier we could meet here…but you’re just slowing me down. I’m sorry.’

Anger was blazing inside of him. ‘Sorry?’ Shane echoed, ‘Sorry? How are you so sure that you’ll be the first to find him anyway? I’ve been putting up with you for not even a day yet you’re annoying me so much I could kill you on the spot!’

‘Then why don’t you?’ Abi growled, holding back the urge to punch him.
Shane paused, avoided Abi’s cold glare and turned round, ‘Forget it. You were right. We are holding each other back, which would make it all the easier if you just disappeared off the face of the earth!’

‘Fine,’ Abi punched Shane’s stomach before trudging off into the forest, not even glancing back to see Shane’s frowning face. He was confused; not sure whether to be furious or depressed. He dragged his feet off in the other direction.

If Xavier were here he would be really disappointed. He thought. If it was one thing he told me never to do it was to never let go of any friends, especially if it was the only one you had.

He picked up speed as he scoffed, ‘Two heads are better than one?’ he said to himself, ‘They’re liars. They’re all liars. There is no one in this world that I can trust, that’s for sure. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, now that’s something I can follow. Xavier is dead to me. I am my own person.

The Brother She Never Had
Xavier sat down on a rock, which was surpris-ingly comfortable. Night was falling, yet he was far from the mountains. He heard stories about those who were locked away there with the monster Endora. Tortured every day, until they eventually died. Working as the servants for her whether they liked it or not. He doubt-ed Emori was even still alive, but at least he could try.

The moon shone in the sky, lighting up the forest canopy, sending small shafts of light through onto the grass. He always liked the way the sun and moon did that. As a child he loved to play with the small splotches of light. He remembered trying to catch them. How foolish he was back then – yet it was still fun.

He knew what it was like to lose a sibling. His sister, Serena and his whole village had died at the hands of Endora, which was why he was so desperate to get revenge. Xavier wouldn’t let his coldness show – he knew it would worry others – but he had to let it out sometimes; it was eating him alive. All that anger and vengeance was just waiting to burst out, tear apart that hag and finish this once and for all. It would be his only chance to get to her. If he lost that battle, all would be lost, and nothing left. If he lost, he would die. He wasn’t willing to die just yet.

A couple of bats flew out into the night sky, sending a shiver down his spine. Xavier closed his eyes, yawning. It was getting late, and he would have to spend the whole of the next day walking.

'It’s a long day tomorrow. I hope I don’t get killed.’

Ambushed

He was stuck. The tree had grabbed onto Shane’s top and now he couldn’t go anywhere. He sighed. Morning was coming and he would have to escape quickly before The Masked found him on their territory. He should have never come this way – he knew that – but what he didn’t know was that they were watching him, lying in wait for just the right moment to pounce. Unaware of the heavy breathing in the bushes, Shane pulled his top desperately until it ripped and he stumbled as he carried on through the dark, confined forest. Never again. Never again am I going to be so naive that I’m going to let anyone get to me so bad. He thought.

He pounded his fist against a tree trunk. He may have looked vulnerable on the outside, but he was very cold-blooded, ruthless and merciless inside.

‘Seems like you’re on a long journey, care to tell us where you’re going?’

He whipped round to find a tall woman, with long, shiny chestnut hair and a hockey mask coving her face. ‘Oh no…,’ he whispered to himself, just as she pulled his top and he fell to the ground, pinned down. Scrambling to get on his feet, the Masked revealed themselves, one by one. Shane just prayed and prayed that it would just be a nightmare. One of them was wearing what looked like a skinned human face with real human skin – pale and covered with the smell of death, with holes for eyes and a gaping wide hole below for the mouth. Shane nearly threw up at the sight of it.

Turning his head away in disgust, he looked over to the others - nervously at first, but after thinking about the past couple of disastrous events, his face just frowned, giving off a cold aura all of a sudden.

The glossy-haired woman laughed, her voice like silk, ‘You don’t seem worried by us, I assume you’ve gotten more cocky and arrogant since the last time we saw you, either that or Xavier is hiding nearby in a tree to come save you.’

‘Never say that name again,’ Shane said, clenching his fists and forcing himself up.

‘Oh, touchy are we? What happened between you and Xavier? Is Xavier alright? I always quite liked Xavier, would you tell Xavier for me next time you see him?’ A smile played on her evil lips.

Shane swore under his breath. He wasn’t going to let her be the one pushing him around. It was about time he took things into his own hands.

He bared his fangs at her, growling with boldness. The Masked woman reached behind her back and pulled out her sword from its sheath. From then on everything fell silent, and it was as if they were the only two there.

Shane closed his eyes and took a deep breath. She was glaring at him behind the mask with those oddly coloured emerald green eyes. He knew she was smirking at him, getting cocky. He charged at her with tremendous speed, his fist coming down on her face like a ton of bricks. She blocked, spun him round to avoid being bitten, and pinned him to the ground again. ‘Not so tough now, are you?’

The swish from her sword could be heard as the Masked woman forced it straight through Shane’s neck, the tip of the shiny blade coming out the other side. The Masked cheered with satisfaction, the woman dangling him by her sword. Shane wasn’t moving. He was dead.
