Prologue
‘Come on,’ spoke a voice, echoing in the eerie night.

‘I’m coming,’ another voice said, trying to catch up to the other. They had both been searching and searching for a certain person for weeks on end. It was beginning to seem impossible. The two came across a sinister forest with a town on the other side. Dogs howled and cats and mice fled. Suddenly a shadow loomed over them, and they turned around, only to realize that it was gone. One of them shivered, while the other looked almost tranquil. It was getting late; most of the town had their house lights switched off and there were no cars recklessly speeding along the road. Smirking, one nodded to the other and they paced down a dark alleyway. I’ve always wanted to do this, like in those movies. The shorter and more eager one thought. They came to a dead end, where they sat in the corner, waiting for the sun to rise again. While the younger, less experienced one thought about movies, the older and more cunning one was thinking a new plot in his head. I’ll hunt you down, Endora. I promise.

Chapter 1
The Dream
It was a Tuesday, a day that most people hate, when a simple girl named Abi Maroon obviously had to go to school. For some reason she felt that she had to keep away from that school under any circumstances, yet she did not know why.

She thought that it could have been about one of those peculiar dreams she had been having lately, or – she thought most likely – it could have been that shadow darting around the school halls. Being a 14 year old girl, she thought that she had “gotten out of the habit of imagining things since it is only for little kids” but this seemed so real. She could not deny the fact that this shadow definitely connected to a living person or thing. She thought to herself that this would be the day that the shadow’s body would be discovered.
* * *
It was at lunchtime when Abi spotted the shadow. It slipped around the corners of the hall and Abi tried to follow its movements with her piercing blue eyes, however, it was just too fast. ‘What is it?’ She silently whispered to herself.

‘What’s what?’ Daniel, the most annoying boy in her class walked up to her looking proud as usual.

‘Ugh,’ Abi said in disgust, watching him hold his head high, ‘Forget it.’ Abi turned away miserably trying to ignore the fact that the shadow was mocking her as she dragged her feet on her way to her next class. The shadow had got away.

The end of the day was officially one of the oddest afternoons ever. As usual, she had left school, got the coach, walked the rest of the way with her friends, but when it came to arriving at her house, this was the furthermost unnerving feeling she had ever felt when she creaked open the front door. Abi did not usually scream in horror but this was an exception.

The window was smashed and in pieces and spread across the carpet. A shout came from the kitchen. Someone had broken in.

Chapter 2
Breaking In
‘W-what happened?’ Abi said to herself in shock, ‘Mum? Are you home?.’ Her eyes drifted over to the kitchen, where suddenly a screeching noise boomed from behind the chestnut door. A glass was lying on a table nearby. She gently positioned it against the door and pressed her ear lightly against it. Her heart was racing as the thought of the door opening and a knife against her throat crossed her mind.

She could hear a voice. It belonged to a man; she figured that he was older than her, which made her even more terrified. ‘Please be quiet, Shane and help me with this before someone comes and sees us!’ It was another man with a slightly deeper voice, and she figured that from what he was saying, they were trying to steal something either heavy or slippery. Something that was hard to carry.

Abi stepped back carefully, making sure that they did not hear her trying to go back outside. When she got somewhere safe, she could call her parents and tell them. She got to the door, next to the staircase. She unlocked it and layed her hand on the handle. She knew that this could be a risk, as the door needed to be oiled and occasionally did not open, and when it did open, it made such a racket.

When she came in, the screeching had covered her, but now all was silent. She pulled at the door. Thankfully, it opened. Abi stumbled out just as the kitchen door opened and immediately, one of the men turned to her. She froze. She had to do something. She could not let her fears take over. She turned to see his face. He had blonde hair, long and flowing, and deep brown eyes. Abi screamed and turned to run.

She tore down the street, tears seeming to run endlessly from her eyes. She got to the end of the road and turned into a dark alley to hide in the shadows. She knew it was a stupid idea, but she could not keep running forever. Abi crouched in the corner keeping out of the light. She cautiously peeked round the corner. No sight of anyone or anything.

She went back into her crouching position, feeling her heart thumping against her chest. All of a sudden she felt as though she was being watched; she didn’t even want to breathe as she felt hot breath against her neck. She froze as someone tapped her shoulder. She swung round as her eyes opened wide. The cold breeze blew as the same man stood right in front of her.
‘Hello there. I’m Xavier Shade’

Chapter 3
Being Introduced to Xavier Shade
He was wearing a red cloak and a brown filthy-looking leather vest top and trousers. Abi stayed silent.

‘Well you seem quite silent. What seems to be the problem, Miss Maroon?’
Her eyes widened even more, ‘How do you know my name? I don’t even-‘
Xavier interrupted, ‘I will not answer any of your questions until you answer at least one of mine.’

For the first time ever, Abi realised that she was trembling, ‘Well, you see,’ she tried to sound as casual as possible, but she could not possibly hide the fear, ‘it’s because you’re holding a knife against my throat, sir.’
‘Mm…Yes. Sir. I like it,’ he said, not taking notice of how Abi’s face was soaked with tears.

He dropped the lethal knife and grabbed her brand new jacket and lifted her off the ground. He lifted his hand into the air. She thought that this would be it. The end of her life. The day she died. Xavier clicked his fingers. She blinked as the air around her felt like it was collapsing and was pressing against her at every angle. She blinked.

The next thing she knew, she was back at her house, staring out the window at all the greenery in the garden her mother had worked so hard on during weekends. Tulips, Camellias, Roses, Pansies, Cosmos, she had it all, so very neatly organised for everyone to stare at in awe.

Abi looked around, mouth wide open as she warily turned to Xavier. She sat down, on the spot, trying to make sense of what had happened. She immediately stopped sobbing and lay down, watching his shiny leather shoes pointing in her direction.

She felt as though she could not think with all the pain in her head. There was only one thing that came to her mind during this pain. One thing she absolutely had to do that included no movement of her limbs whatsoever. She screamed. The next thing she knew Xavier clamped his hand around her mouth, tied a cloth around her face, a separate one on her mouth. Xavier tied ropes around her wrists and ankles to keep her still. He put her over his shoulder and carried her upstairs.

Chapter 4
Shane the Vampire
Muffled noises came from the girl on Xavier’s shoulder as he clambered up the stairs. He took her over to the main bedroom and dropped her on the bed. A man was standing in the corner watching her squirm about like a worm, much like the one in the kitchen. He gazed at her with his piercing purple eyes, in which he could tell scared her because he was different. He hated the word. Many judged him because of his appearance. He always tried to blend in with the crowd, but it was always too hard. He could never do it like Xavier. He had always looked up to him, with the way he was everything he had ever wished to be.

‘Shane, Can you try not to bite her? I know you’re a vampire and all, but can you resist just this once?’ Xavier had a solemn tone in his voice - as if it was actually important.

‘Yeah sure - I mean, how hard could it be? It’s not like I ever disobey what you say, right?’ His eyes twinkled in the hope of getting some praise from his idol.

‘Yeah. You’ve never disobeyed me, and I’m proud of that,’ he patted Shane the vampire on his head, ‘Shane Axel Halo would never do that to me.’ Sarcasm spread across his voice.

Shane ran his tongue across his fangs, and then looked down to the floor. ‘I could do without the cynicism,’ he mumbled.

Thanks for reading the first part of my book that I'm currently working on :D tell me your thoughts and ideas to help me make it even better :)
