Gai is more likely than Lee. We've seen Gai get pushed the brink plenty of times. To show grow from one generation to the next Gai could die using the 8 gates and then Lee uses 5 or 6 and puts out the same level of power.

So masashi killed neji off maybe b/c he didn't know what else to do with his character. So I say let rock Lee use all 8 gates in an all out attempt to buy naruto some time.any thoughts?
