i think D stands for destiny , where the person with D in their name has the destiny to make a great impact on the world
to back up my claim:
Monkey D. Dragon - revolutionary army leader
Gol D. Roger - pirate king , started the great pirate era
Monkey D. Garp - a great marine hero , took on Roger many times
Marshall D. Teach - a yonko , took the world by storm when unleashing his new devil fruit powers in the war, a main trigger for the start of the same war
Portgas D. Rouge - gave birth to the pirate kings son
Portgas D. Ace - the trigger for the war at marineford , in which whitebeard died , fleet admiral
reseigned etc.
Jaguar D. Saul - turned on the marines and wound up on robins island , this may have been an event in a chain of fate in which the Oharan people died
Monkey D. Luffy - influence in the war, future pirate king , Son of Dragon, hit a tenryuubito on sabaody, saved the fishmen , captured caeser , causing great dismay in the new world which will probably completely change how the world works in terms of pirates , donflamingo,kaido,big mam are all affected by this event.

I think it stands for "Descendants", where does with the D in their name are the descendants of the country that got destroyed by the World Government in the Void Century.

That'd be cool. Luffy and the other D holders are like the opposite of the celestial dragons and Luffy can go round punching them all the more! I hope.

From what we know there were the people of the moon who were once defeated by 20 men who's descendants are the Teenryubito and respected by the world government because of that, also it would explain why they wear a space suit.
Now the people of the moon probably made the Rio Poneglyph and scattered it into the world so their decsendants could one day find out the truth of void century and destroy the powers that be meaning the world government and these people are hybrids of the people of the moon and humans so they're half-moon people hence the D.
