If you look closely at Shippuden and Naruto, they almost represent the seperate examples of how a trilogy story is told.
First, Naruto, the introduction that introduces the characters and sets up the story for when Shippuden comes along. This part shows the characters growing from nothing into what they are today.
Time skip ahead to Shippuden, which is essentially the main story, the climax. This is what the entire purpose of the prequel (Naruto) was for. All things foreshadowed in Naruto come to a point in this series. Shippuden is the meat and potatoes of the Naruto franchise, and I've always thought of it as the main climax while Naruto as a prequel.
So what does that leave us with? Why, an ending with falling action and a conclusion. So far it has represented a trilogy, and I think Kishi may do a short (perhaps shorter than Part 1) third series about the falling action and the eventual end of the series. If you ask me, this would be a perfect oppurtunity to deal with Orochimaru and Sasuke. If Kishi said the Manga has a year to go, that sounds like just enough time to finish the War Arc nicely, but not really include the Sasuke conflict.
That's why I think a short third series is inevitable, and will deal with the falling action and conclusion of the conflict with Sasuke.
