Why was Madara feared?

In the past to present everyone in Naruto seemed to fear and get chills from Madara, but not Hashirama. How come? Is he more powerful than Hashirama?

I think you got it backwards a little there. Hashirama was marginally stronger than Madara during their era. It's edo ressurected Madara who makes Hashirama's power look like a fairy tale. Other than that. Yeah the rest of what you posted is pretty accurate.

You've misunderstood.

When someone says "________'s power is fairy tale", it means that their power is so great that many people generations later don't believe his/her power was real.

I don't know from where you pulled that point.It took Madara and Kyuubi to stand upto Hashirama which clearly explains the difference b/w Mads and Hashi wasn't marginal.
