Our economy has been on the verge of collapse since 2016, and with Trump being in the white-house, the possibility is higher than ever.
But yeah, ignorance is really to blame for all of it. If people were more informed about politics and if more people went out to vote, we wouldn't be in this situation either. We have corporate shills who make up the entire government, both Republican and Democrat, and make policies that help the rich while hurting the poor/middle class and it only took decades for people to start being aware of the fact that the people in the government aren't representing the best interests of their constituents, but rather their donors.
I don’t like the idea of Oprah running for President. It seems like a lateral move. Obama caused the swing due to emotional ties, first black president, trump used that same emotional wave. We should stop this wave of idolized leaders.
This basically. Becoming president is a popularity contest and not on what political goals appeal to one or the other. I’ve asked many people why they vote for who they vote for. About 95% votes for one or the other because of superficial reasons (because they are black, because they tell it like it is, because they are a woman)
When I ask them what they think of their policy on any given subject, it becomes a lesson in the popular meme of the day. It’s like asking a 12 year old about such matters...no that’s a disservice to 12 year olds.
This lack of knowledge and wanting someone else to do the thinking is what ultimately will do us in. Corporations are running everything now including politics and they will suck America dry then move to their individual offshore areas and sip one the tears of the the despotic nation that we will be left with.
I worry for my country’s future sometimes
I think Bernie Sanders said it best. While we do need more diversity in the government, your skin color/gender/*** shouldn't be enough for you to acquire votes. There should be a litmus test for every politician which proves that they are willing to represent the people and not just their donors.
As for Oprah. Yes, she would not make a good president. I hear so many people try to defend her in saying that she'd be better than Trump, but being better than Trump is a low bar. Even Mitt Romney is better than Trump, but that doesn't make him a good candidate.
People also seem to forget that Oprah supported the Iraq War, but aside from that, we don't really know any of her political positions, or know if she knows them either. Does she support Medicare For All? Does she support Money out of politics? Is she even aware of these issues? We simply don't know.
We've had enough billionaire celebrities with no political experience in politics. Let's aim high, not low when choosing our candidates.
