Why shipping is so serious business in Naruto?

Guys who want doormat waifus, girls who want to fix bad guy crushes, guys who wants absolute unconditional dedication, girls who can't speak up for themselves... They all fit somewhere.

Romance in Naruto is bad, imbalanced and come from problematic teens. Like the inserters.

Because the story and characters are complete bullshit. Shipping was all that was left for a lot of people. Even if 90% of the pairings are poorly developed and ass pulls. I ship characters in OP. :^) Mihawk x Perona is my favorite right now. Shipping can actually be really fun.

Shipping is just a part of "fandom culture" in general and you're always going to run into it no matter what franchise you're talking about.

As for shipping in Naruto though, while it's nowhere close to the main focus of the series (until the movie/epilogue at least), the romance subplot is definitely there. It was extremely poorly developed, yes, but still there nonetheless if you wanted to read into it. By surrounding yourself in fanon for years, people got pretty attached to their ships, and for a lot of people it became more of a game of just wanting to be able to say they "won" the ship war.

Teenage girls and Beta males always make a huge deal out of it in Shonen related stuff, makes the story worse everytime too.

Each person has its own interests, if they like pairings let them like. I know Naruto is not a manga focused on romance, but I personally like the pairings, specially when they are between action and fight scenes, because I don't like stories just about romance. Since the things I most care about a manga/book/series are the storyline and the "drama", I like the romance in it.

The problem is when people don't have maturity to deal with it. But I admit that I liked the shipping wars, I used to crack up on people seriously fighting over it.
