Well if you look @ the previous chapters you noticed that Hashirama gave Sasuke some Chakra and some type of technique. But let us go a little further. Do you guys remember when Sasuke was close to being dead and Kabuto was keeping him alive trying to save Sasuke by giving him Hashirama cells and some Hashirama DNA?Now what we know about Hashirama that's a fact is he was the previous reincarnation of Ashura. We also found out that Madara was the previous reincarnation of Indra. Now having that knowledge we can infer that when you use Edo Tensei the Chakras of the Incarnations stick with you as we got proof with Madara still having Indra's Chakra and Ashura's chakra after being resurrected after he stole it in his previous time from Hashirama. Which equals to Hagoromo's Chakra.
I could of swore I read from somewhere that the brother awaken his father's ocular powers but a weaken version of the Rinnegan.
Now that Sasuke met with the sage we found out that he is the present reincarnation of Indra. After meeting with the sage we concluded that he gain Indra Chakra. Indra was full transmigrated. Now somehow that Hashirama Chakra who was a previous reincarnation reacted with the awakened Indra's chakra already in Sasuke. Therefore he was able to bring forth the Rinnegan. Another thing that make's this chapter more intriguing is the fact that it's not just a Rinnegan but it's the 9 tomoe Juubi eye. Now for what I know the Juubi eye was given to those who fully absorb the Shinju. What we know about the eye already? Well, the first wielder of the eye was Kaguya. The things the eye was use for was to cast infinite Genjutsu and put people into a infinite loop. It's kind of like Izanami in a way; but knowing how Genjutsu is base on Yin release there's a lot to be said about the eye. Like I am pretty sure two abilities would be able to cast Izanami and Izanagi without being able to lose eye sight. Basically unlimited Izanami and Izanagi; also since Izanami and Izanagi is base off of Senju it makes sense. Now taking into the conclusion we don't really understand much about the dojutsu. Like I am pretty sure the 9 tomoe stand for something. I predicted that the 9 tomoe represented the amount of Bijuss but I am not so sure about that as far as it goes for Sasuke. We also saw that Sasuke only had the eye on the right side and on his left side was straight Sharigan. I know there is a reason for it. It can be that Sasuke is premature right now, right eye is still under development or Kishi just wanted it that way. However he probably can activate it; who knows. Sasuke isn't the only one who had possess the Sharigan and Rinnegan at the same time. Obito had the same variation, Sharigan and Rinnegan and so did Madara. xd
A little theory:
How Madara awaken Hagoromo. At the time Ashura and Indra powers weren't awakened. They didn't transmigrate through Hashirama and Madara. So this is how the formula will go.
Indra Chakra + Ashura Chakra = Hagoromo Chakra + Rinnegan
Awakened Indra Chakra + Ashura Chakra = Juubi Eye
Awakened Ashura + Indra Chakra = Awakened Hagoromo + Juubi eye
Awakened Hagoromo + Shinju = Awakened Kaguya + Juubi Eye
