First of all i would like to start off by stating this is NOT a Sakura bashing thread. I am only dealing with logics here...
Anyway... more to the point; I had always wondered why Sakura Haruno was chosen to be part of the original Team 7 instead of Hinata Hyuuga.
As we know in regards to the storyline of the manga both Sasuke and Naruto have relevance to the origins of the Shinobi world; being the reincarnations of both Indra and Ashura (who as we know were the two sons of the Sage of the Six Paths).
In my opinion it would have been more interesting to have had Hinata Hyuuga as part of Team 7 as like Kaguya (the grand-mother of Indra and Ashura) she is a female weilder of the Byakugan.
I then came across this old scan from the original Naruto Manga and then it all made sense to me:
Quote: "We tried to balance each teams strength..."
Makes sense...
The third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, was aware of the fact the Naruto was the Host of the Kyuubi, and therefore would potentially be able to weild the power of Jinchuriki. He was also aware of the fact that Sasuke was the last existing member (other than Itachi) of the Great Uchiha Clan (Sharingan Users and descendants of the SO6P).
Although he would not have been aware that Kaguya had the Byakugan, he still realised that placing a Hyuuga in Team 7 would have made the Team too OP in the long run (or should i say Kishimoto knew that), so instead he placed someone relatively or downright weak to balance the strength of the team. As I said this is not Sakura bashing: I am a very logical thinker.
Had Team 7 been made up of Naruto, Sasuke, and Hinata it would have been an echo of Ashura, Indra, and Kaguya (the female Byakugan user/Hyuuga). But instead of this, Kishi opted to simply include a character to negate the potentially OP powers of Naruto and Sasuke.
and errrm.... he left her character development there as she had seemed to have served her purpose (well that's how it comes across to me).
Obviously we have yet to see if her relevance to the story is redeemed as Obito has entrusted a task to her but I guess the upcoming manga chapters will reveal that if it is the case.
Thanks for reading.

Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura Hinata
EDIT: Lool let me make one thing CLEAR. I am NOT a Hinata fanboy AT ALL. In regards to Hyuugas, NEJI has always been one of my favorite characters (this is aimed at Sakurachan defenders). It's not about wars; but logical questions and answers.

Since discovering this it made me think: 'Why then was Sakura placed with them?'
