i guess Itachi isn't really that great of a strategist after all then if he was really tryna kill the one person he wanted to save huh.

Itachi told Kakashi that the only person who can break Tsukuyomi is someone with a Sharingan and of Uchiha blood (related to him), which was obviously hinting at sauce.

Itachi knew from the beginning that Sasuke was the only one capable of stopping him. He was trying to make him stronger, albeit, in a very retarded way. IMO

The only one capable of releasing it was Sasuke, so basically anyone bar Sasuke who gets hit is one shot.

Well yeah, but that doesn't mean Sasuke didn't break it himself. Pointing out the plot was in his favor is obvious, I mean Itachi was even dying at this point.

So literally nothing was stopping Sasuke from winning that fight.

Itachi's Tsukuyomi cannot kill Sasuke as he fulfills all conditions; Chakra, body and blood. Itachi had to hold back against Kakashi, as his Sharingan can only delay the inevitable.
