Because those people are idiots and haven't actually watched it and thus are judging prematurely. They see it is animated and assume that it's main demographic is for children, oh how ignorant they are.

Most people, including most adults, don't understand that manga (source for most anime) has a genre for every age group and taste.
I used to get insulted when people said I "read comics" and " watch cartoons", but it's their loss, and it helps weed out the ones I probably don't want to associate with anyway.
