why did tsunade send a bunch of genins and shikamaru to retrieve sasuke?

Im sure kakashi could solo those four gate guys.

ahhh the magic of plot convenience.

If you'd watch the Anime carefully you'd know that there were no Jounins available at that point since all were sent on different missions beforehand.

It was a stupid plot device to make the fights interesting and keep us on the edge of our seats rather than one-sided battles. I mean, how anti-climatic would it have been if Asuma, Gai, Kakashi, and Kurenai got sent after Sasuke? The Sound 4 would have been obliterated, and even Kimimaro won't be able to put up much of a fight against four Jonin.

I can't see any other reason because the Sharingan is an extremely rare and powerful Kekkei Genkai, and anybody else getting their hands on it could prove to be a massive problem in the future. None of the "missions" the other Jonin were doing could be anywhere near as important as preventing a weapon of mass destruction falling into enemy hands.

Not seeing what is funny about that statement. A full fledged Mangekyo's potential power is undeniably a weapon of mass destruction, especially in the wrong hands.

I agree, was there really literally no jounin available? What about Anbu? Did Tsunade want the rookies to develop or something? Such plot, meh.

The story arc was great though.

Maybe current Naruto can, but not Part I Naruto. But that has nothing to do with how dangerous the Mangekyo is. Just because one person can beat it does not take away from its lethality.

If Orochimaru obtained Sasuke's eyes and unlocked the Mangekyo over the timeskip, you will have an Amaterasu trigger-happy, Susano'o spamming, snake barfing, invincible man with undead zombies at his disposal walking around who hungers for Konoha's blood. So yeah, the Mangekyo is a weapon of mass destruction. It was powerful enough that an inexperienced fighter nearly killed a Kage and managed to survive being simultaneously attacked by the other Kages for a decent amount of time. In the hands of a more seasoned fighter, it would have been even more dangerous.

I doubt any mission they were doing outweighed the importance of preventing an S-ranked criminal who hates Konoha from obtaining what was probably the village's most powerful Kekkei Genkai.

There was no one available. Konoha was still recovering from the war with Suna and all high-ranked ninja, including jonin and ANBU were sent to missions, either to guard the borders against possible assaults on weakened village, or to make sure the relations with other villages have not deteriorated, or to act as spies to predict potential attacks. Such are the consequences of war.

These tasks were more important than bringing back a 12-year old genin with psychological problems, so it's no surprising such a mission was given to a bunch of genin and chunin. Cruel reality, I know, but that's the way it is. U_U

I doubt any mission they were doing outweighed the importance of preventing an S-ranked criminal who hates Konoha from obtaining what was probably the village's most powerful Kekkei Genkai.

The risk for the village posed by Sasuke's betrayal was only potential and even if it was to happen, it would take years before Orochimaru could accomplish that. Jirayia knew about it, so Tsunade likely knew it as well.
The danger of the village being attacked, however, was very real and it could happen virtually any moment.

It would have been boring if jounin went and got him, then Sasuke wouldn't have gotten away and gone to orochimaru.

so yeah plot no jutsu

The jounin were doing other things (usin protocal to protect the village), but also the 5th wasn't stupid she new exactly what she was doing.... there of the 5 were future heads of there clan. Set to surpass their parants as well as their teachers. Let's not forget the rookie 9 were the youngest to participate in the exams, while neiji (RIP) was in league of his own. Plus let's not forget the main thing that seperated the lief from other villages was the will of fire and the brotherly loving second nature tendency to protect each other ( two major themes that was prevalent naruto)

Are you serious? As strong as Lee, Naruto and Gaara were for three genin, they still were nowhere near jonin level (maybe Gaara was close, but still not jonin level), yet alone low-kage level like Kakashi.
Kimimaro wouldn't stand a chance against Kakashi.
