First of all, he didn't defeat Pain. Nagato was the final Pain and he never settled things with him in battle. Go reread the chapters where Edo Nagato was solo'ing Naruto as well as Bee neg-diff to see what would have happened if Nags didn't get tnj'd.

Second of all, even if you class that as a "victory" it was Kuruma yet again who was the mvp of the fight. Naruto had zero answers for chibaku tensei. His little pet had to bail him out.

Lastly, Kishi had to nerf God mode's powers initially to allow him to compete. The Deva path Pain didn't regain his push and pull techniques (which I'll repeat, Naruto alone had no answer for) conveniently until Naruto beat the first 5 Pains. If Pain starts with an unnerfed deva path, Naruto wouldn't even get the chance to beat one lawl.
