Why did Madara died shortly after he awakened Rinnegan?
I believe he died because the Rinnegan drain his life force. That's right, I believe one of Rinnegan's cons is that it drain your life force when it is activated and probably even more when you use the Six paths techniques.
I think it's normal to assume old person like Madara won't have much life force left in his body, in fact its amazing that he is alive for so long. When he awakened and activated Rinnegan, he shorten his own already short lifespan and he realized it. He has to rely on the Mazo to keep on living in the flashback of the current chapter. Maybe because his life force is already run out by that time?
Now, why do he need Nagato? Why don't he just gave it to other people? Is Nagato special? Why, yes he is. He is an Uzumaki. The Uzumaki clan who possessed incredible longevity and life force. Do you see where this is going now?
Nagato was able to use the Rinnegan freely because of his incredible life force.
Now, let's talk about Rinne Tensei. By channelling his power through the King of Hell, the Rinnegan wielder can re-infuse new life force energy to the dead bodies of those who have died. With their rejuvenated bodies acting as an anchor, the individual souls are then able to leave even the crossroad between life and the afterlife, returning back to their physical vessels.
The main reason as we now know is he wanted to be the juubi's jinchuriki and the only way possible for this to happen was by being alive obviously and not in his current edo state. Now, if Madara were to be revived with Rinne Tensei then his life force will be restored and he will be brought back to life. It might be possible that his life force will be restored beyond what he have when he was a live. Remember, Nagato revived lots of people in Konoha with RT so maybe the Life force reinfuse to each of them are little but enough to bring them back to life. If its use on only on one person with full power then I can imagine that person will be revived with massive life force in his body. That's what Madara is after and with that amount of life force in his body.
