There are five things that make a villain good. Charisma, power, backstory, goal, intelligence. Maddy has charisma and power OBVIOUSLY thats why he is liked but completly lacks the others. if you were wondering im doing obito next. BACKSTORY) madaras backstory is awful why did he turn evil again? He turned evil long after izuna died (years) and left the village because his clan ignored him maybe if he stayed in the village they wouldnt have been annexed. GOAL) put the world under an illusion because he doesnt like the ninja system. Why not just use it on himself? And wont everyone die of starvation? INTELIGENCE) for a man that knows how to do eye surgery on himself he is not smart. Most of his plans rely completely on luck. Ex obito falling in the cave or being defeated by the alliance. Not only that but he gave nagato his eyes without telling him his plan. And madara consistently makes numerous plotholes throughout the story.

Actually madara has never stated his motive and blatantly said he would even kill his own child or family member to complete his goal meaning they are not the cause for him being evil.

we've seen his background story with hashirama
if you think all of these backup plans after backup plans after backup plans of him being prepared and in control of whatever situation comes towards him aren't proof enough of intelligence then I don't know what to say. Especially since all of these plans were created before he even died.
And his goal is to create the genjutsu i believe... that's the only thing we're unsure of.

Madara's back story will be tackled on this arc, Obito had his first because he was first to fall down. Also Madara is more complex than Onito will ever be. He endured far more than Obito did. -Acknowledged in history > Rikudou Sennin + Juubi.
-Scientist > Experiments on Hashirama's cells + Zetsu.
-Manipulator > Brainwashed Obito who brainwashed everyone.

-Eye moon plan.
-Uzumaki destruction
-Rin's death and Obito's madness

He is easily the best written villain and character. That's why it was destined a long time ago that Madara will indeed be the final villain which he is right now. The story dependent on him.

Here are the reasons why Madara is more complex than Obito will ever be.

He was born and lived in time of constant war.
He had witnessed his siblings and parents die in war.
His best friend happened to be his mortal enemy
He was leader of a clan who has repeatedly lost to it's rival clan losing trust of his clansmen.
He was shamed by his rival in battle.
His brother died and entrusted him the power to protect his clan only to be betrayed by the very people he protected.
He co founded Konoha and yet he was put aside and disrespected
After losing everything he built and protected he fought Hashirama to a battle to death and he lost.
He survived but spent decades of his life on cold isolation, bearing the scars of bitter defeat.
