He surpassed what was previously thought to be the peak of ability in his field by light years, surpassing that thresh hold by nearly 20x, and effectively eliminating any and all weaknesses associated with the ability as a whole, all before the age of 16, while surpassing some of the greatest minds in medical ninjutsu history, and creating a branch ability never since replicated, that he also advanced to the point of essential artificial immortality.

Pain (pre-Nagato reveal) will always be my favorite for a lot reasons.

1.) His ideology as a villain was the most understandable and realistic. Unlike Obito he wasn't butthurt over a girl, and unlike Madara he wasn't jealous about being weaker than someone. Pain didn't care much about himself and instead focused on stopping the atrocities of war and avenging thousands of lives that genuinely mattered to him. He also had a very good understanding of the shinobi system and its flaws.

2.) His backstory was enthralling. We had never heard of the rinnegan before, and almost everything about him was shrouded in mystery. His connections to Jiraiya and his place in the prophecy were also very interesting.

3.) He had the best theme song by far. It was so epic.

4.) His character design was awesome. The piercings, the cloak, and his cold, piercing eyes. He def looked the creepiest.

5.) His demeanor was super intimidating. No matter how intense something got he stayed expressionless and barely showed any emotion. To me that's just scary because it makes you feel like nothing can scare or hurt the guy.

6.) He was the leader of the akatsuki. Only a true badass can keep a deadly team like them in line.

Madara, because he was a perfect mix of everything i love about villains. It takes a lot more conviction and strength to rock the black hat than it does being the person everybody adores, and i admire him for wearing that hat the way he did...all while having the kind of relationships he had with the ppl he cared about.

One of the most recognized and well-reputed Shinobi of Konoha and of his time as well. Kakashi is once in a generation prodigy who demonstrated his genius from the very young age, he climbed through the ninja ranks very quickly(record), significantly younger than his generation in age.

He has a very tragic background, there were many stages in his life that could have broke him down but he maintained his composure, he's very strong mentally, calm, sharp, observant & a master tactician.
He is one of the best if not the best all-round Shinobi in the manga, having command in basics of Shinobi skills: Ninjutsu, Taijutsu & Genjutsu and other aspects of Shinobi art.
He is also a great leading-figure, given the rank of Jonin and subordinates to lead them in the War, lead a squad while in ANBU, named Jonin-leader of a special team, lead a whole Shinobi Alliance division in the final War, lead his Team 7 against the Alien threat and after few considerations finally given the responsibility of a Hokage and it is generally acknowledged that he turned Konoha into a metropolitan city and introduced technology in the world of Ninja...

My other favorites would be,

- Naruto Uzumaki
- Uchiha Itachi

I can't claim to understand how he felt as a kid but to overcome that tumultuous stage of his life and become a kage at the age of 16 to protect the citizens of his village even though some still have/had shady feelings for him really makes me marvel at his character. Coupled with his design, his magnificent badass facial expressions, his poses and the fact that he can do a lot of things with sand like freaking creating a tsunami without much effort makes him overcome Hinata as my top fav. Hinata&Himawari share second spot for me.

He's the main. The overall theme you're talking about was basically told through his struggle, and how the struggle of those around him connects, but still the focus was Naruto

Madara is my favorite because of his ideology, power , personality, determination, and just his over all existence in this series! He may have been an antagonist, but to me he will always be a hero to the world! I greatly empathize with Madara and share similarities to him.
