Also I was watching an x factor episode with a gay guy in it, and before he started singing he says he was gay.

I mean wtf? You don't hear me saying "I am straight" every 5 min.

openly gay individuals are still a distinct minority and one that is consistently targeted and persecuted by many. by introducing themselves as gay first they eliminate any further issues with regards to their sexuality. it's like clearing the air right off the bat, and most openly gay people i've encountered see it as a something of a defense mechanism.

also, many have more of an association with their identity in everyday conversations because of whatever issues they've faced with regards to intolerance.

to put it bluntly; very few straight people are hated for their sexual orientation therefore there was never a reason to openly state it to others.
