Why is the Mangekyo portrayed to be so rare?

During the war between the Uchiha and Senju, there must have been plenty of Uchiha that lost close friends/family, right? There should have been tons of MS users crawling around, yet Kishi makes it look like there were only a few.

Even in the wars, the Uchiha should have lost those close to them, leading to more MS awakenings.

So the question is, why are the criteria for activating the Mangekyo so tenuous? If losing someone close to you and actually "feeling" the loss is all it takes, then the Mangekyo should be pretty common.

Or am I missing something here?

Dude the SSJ transformation was rare, but look what happened. Toriyama went Oprah and said Vegeta you get one, Trunks you get one, Gohan you get one and everybody get one!

OT: Point being said, it's better if only eight individuals have had the MS, rather than a whole clan.

You're missing on how that isn't enough. You have to be special to awaken it.
I don't think so, since most had it at war I guess the Uchiha were like the Senju, when one dies they mourn him for a bit and bury him then go back fighting again. You just need deep, deep, way too deep love to that person. So when something terrible happens to him you feel like you failed everything. Madara wanted his brother protected since he was a kid and then his brother died before him. Obito was all his life around Rin and she died in front of his eyes by his best friend. And Sasuke all his young life around killing Itachi and after killing him he discovered that Itachi was almost opposite of what Sasuke thought, they all aimed for something that took so much time and failed.

I assume the people in the war, as I first said, just mourned the close to them like how Tobirama was to his brothers, therefor didn't awaken it.

it was never portayed to be rare. infact wasn't it said that everyone tried to get it after they saw madara and izuna with it?
They failed though. Merely killing them or watching them die is not enough, you have to "feel" the loss. So if that's all it takes, it should be more common.

I'm pretty sure this is the only criterion for awakening it, though I could be wrong.

Because if you notice all the uchiha that did were special case shinobis

Madara and his brother were gifted to be on par with senju adults
Not to mention madara beings Indra reincarnation

Sasuke being Indra reincarnation

Itachi and shisui were hailed as geniuses among the uchiha one being very proficient in genjutsu and in teleporting Jutsu
The other being all around amazing

Obito is clearly special seeing as how he had his own dimension

I'm too lazy to find the panel of Itachi explaining how Sasuke might be on of the few capable of unlocking it.

Your right the m.s is rare however there was a time before kage , when uchiha were a more blood thirsty clan .
The same era Itachi spoke of ,to sasuke ,when explaining about the inzanami jutsu and why it was created

By the time the 1st hokage came to power. The remaining uchiha that had survived to the present .were a shadow of there former selfs becoming watered down and less hungry for death . Thus the m.s became a rare feat

I believe he thought so because Itachi seen his reaction towards what happened, that Sasuke just asked him what happened to him, like trusting him on he knows rather than instantly blame him for killing him, this shows that Sasuke did trust Itachi with everything, for a child(Sasuke).

Itachi might acknowledged how sensitive Sasuke is and he might awaken them eyes, knowing he will get that much feels to awaken them.

But to you, I know I'll never be able to persuade you. So we can both part ways and say that each to believe what he wants. Is that alright?
