Why is monster so underrated?

I understand it's a long series, and some people feel it has pacing issues. Takes a lot of time to watch. However to me, it's the best written anime out there.

Well, it's not really underrated, it's more just under the radar. Most people would agree it's brilliant, but the people taking part in the debate are just few in number.

it's receiving more of its due nowadays, I feel. I don't know any forum fanbases dedicated to it nor do I think there was a hype train for it. There won't be of course since the manga and anime (which was the most faithful adaption of a manga I've ever seen) ended 10+ years ago.

it just may not be everybody's cup of tea.

The ending was so underwhelming. It was leading up and hyping the ending so much only for nothing. It tried too hard to be edgy and I felt like the enemies were doing what they were for more than just nationalism but nope, I was wrong.

It was one of the greatest though.

One of the things that made me dislike Johan was when he (sort of a spoiler, I guess):

dressed up as his sister. It was out of character and very lame. It made his charisma seem less believable to me. Also, the amount of times people pointed guns but didn't shoot was really annoying

It's not underrated.
On every animesite it's rated very high and the critics are always praising the series.
However it's not 'very popular' if that's what u mean.
