I will say this, if the anime never intended for Ash to age, why in the world did they make the anniversary? The anniversary even goes and say that was the day Ash and Pikachu met, which only happens once a year. Ash met Pikachu on the same day that Ash turned 10.

Now in Pokemon Black and White they ignore that episode instead of keeping in mind they made Ash 11 in the anniversary, that is terrible writing.

Ash remains the same age due to seeing Ho-oh from episode 1. I forgot what the legend was if you saw Ho-oh but I remember reading a good fan-theory as to why Ash remains the same age.

For those who rather read here what Ash says:

"Don't you know what today is Pikachu? This is the day we first met, when we first became friends, I think that really special don't you."

See, the only way to be the same day they met is if 1 year passed, so Ash is 11 years old officially. Then in Pokemon black and white 1st episode the Nariator says "The 10 years old trainer Ash" I mean what the heck.

That is really messed up. I can't find any short videos and I don't know if posting full episode is allowed or not.

Its weird no one commented on this post, I showed a good evidence that Ash should be 11 years old. There may be more evidence, but I don't know other scene.

Not sure if this was seriously answered or not, but it's because the show is aimed primarily at young kids. They want those kids to be able to identify with the characters in the show, so they've decided to keep Ash as a kid forever.

But that the thing just because the show is aimed at young kid, doesn't mean the main character can't age.

I mean look at these shows:

Digimon = main characters grows up
One piece = main characters and everyone grows up yet doesn't look like there an ending like Pokemon
Dragon ball = still popular even though everyone grown up
Rugrats = they grow up

Those are all the shows I remember that grows up.

Those are shows for kids, yet they grow up. I don't see why pokemon can't grow up even if its ultra slow rate.

But the Rugrats had birthdays and such and they never aged until All Grown Up. Even after Kimmy and a year or so had passed since Chaz and the mom(forgot her name) got married they were still the same age.

Weird how memories work like that but unless there was a glitch-y few copies it didn't happen. The only time a Thunderstone doesn't work is on the initial Pikachu(that follows you) in Yellow. He won't evolve unless he's traded and traded back. Since the game Yellow was based on the show maybe Ash's Pikachu refuses to evolve.

My opinion is that half of the shows you named (One Piece and DBZ particularly) are shows that you might continue to watch going into adulthood, so you can 'grow along with the characters' or something. However shows like Pokemon and Digimon (which has a bunch of seasons with different main characters, all kids) are something that kids are much more likely to grow out of, even if they still play the Pokemon video games.

Idk, I don't think I explained that very well, but like Fiddstx said, Ash is kind of like an idol for Pokemon. If you ask me, it's kind of like how Spongebob never ages and still sucks at driving.
